bourbon brown derby

bourbon_brown_derby_1A new year, a new round of cocktails.  My intent has always been to post something for you to cheers with at least once a month.  Unfortunately that didn’t happen in 2014…probably had something to do with being pregos half of the year (or something like that).  Nevertheless I resolute to change in this fresh, crispity, right out of the box 2015.   I could lose weight, eat better, keep a cleaner house or even swear a little less but to be honest, making more drinkity drinks sounds way more fun.

bourbon_brown_derby_2 bourbon_brown_derby_5If you are thinking “Bourbon again Brandy?  Gross.” I apologize.  Well, not really.  First of all we always have bourbon on hand because Sticky loves it.  Secondly, bourbon is as trendy as blanket scarves right now. (Except you won’t have to look up a YouTube video on how to tie it around your neck…and then how not to sweat to death wearing it.)  Lastly, it’s pretty darn good when mixed with other things.  Will I ever drink it on the rocks with a little water?  No way.  Anything that Sticky describes as “putting hair on one’s chest” I’ll take a pass on.  Mix it with a little honey and grapefruit however, and I am in.

bourbon_brown_derby_4 bourbon_brown_derby_3The most crucial part of this drink is the gentle squeeze of grapefruit peel around the rim.  Mist coats your glass giving your senses a treat before you even take one sip.  It’s sweet, yet bitter and just a little floral.  The perfect intro to the smooth taste of bourbon laced with juice and honey.  This drink is fancy and manly all at once.  Resolute to try it.

Cheers to 2015!

goodbye and hello

2014 was full of goodbyes and hellos.  Goodbyes we never wanted to make and hellos we never thought we would get the chance to say.  It was a complicated year filled to the brim with joy, heartache, faith and hope.  We bid a beloved pet farewell.  Watched our girls turn 3.  Welcomed a little guy named Bingham.  Rejoiced in Locke’s cry.  Celebrated the best ONE month birthday ever.  Said goodbye to the sweetest of souls.  While we are ready to say goodbye to 2014 we will forever be grateful to all that it has taught us.  Hope is never in vain.  Love is all that matters.  Goodbye 2014 and hello 2015.

the yummiest of 2014

Happy New Years Eve!!

Can you feel the (freezing) crisp new air rolling in? Sure, we all make resolutions, plans to celebrate, plans to be healthier, more prosperous in the new year.. but you know what I really think is the very best?  The blank calendar.

Last January while strolling the isles of Target I came across a giant calendar that was beautiful and I decided it would live on the side of our refrigerator.  Vividly, I can remember staring at the blank pages of that calendar and dreaming about what would fill them.  Birthdays, our first anniversary, holidays, of course.  But what else?  Things you can’t see for sure but hope will fill the pages… due dates, weddings, milestones in our lives.  I remember flipping to September, knowing that at that second I could possibly be pregnant.. wondering if we would be bringing a baby home that month, if there would be a new birthday to add to that month every year.

Yesterday I took that calendar off of our refrigerator, and slowly flipped through the months before I threw it away.  It’s over.  This year of heartache, miracles, tears and faith… is over.  I tore out September and folded it in my hands.  Locke.  Neatly I tucked that month into his box, and closed my eyes a moment to just be thankful for that season.

Today, a crisp new calendar went up on our refrigerator, and I would be lying if I told you I wasn’t grateful for that sight.  While I am so, so indebted to 2014 and all of the blessings it brought.. I am also very ready for a new tide to roll in.  Welcome, 2015, we are so glad to see you.

To wrap up 2014, I wanted to share a few of our best and most popular recipes from this year!  If you missed them before, be sure to try them out now!

beauty resolutions

Untitled-1

  1. Stop stressing about every little thing and get some sleep.  Seriously.  It’s not even my own problems that keep me up at night – I stress about other peoples stress.  For awhile I was in a good habit of reading a book before bed instead of my phone.  These past few months however I have been glued to my phone before bed which in turn flooded my brain with 100 new thoughts all at once.  Focusing on one simple thing will get me to sleep faster, and more peacefully.  This equates to less stress.
  2. Wash my face every single night.  Yes, I am in my 30s and I still get a little lazy about doing the one thing that all those experts say you must do.  I can remember watching Oprah and listening to Cindy Crawford go on about how vital it is to wash your face every night if you want her glorious youthful-esque skin.  Being too tired is no longer an excuse.  It’s not too late for me is it Cindy?
  3. Drink lots and lots and lots of water.  I know I have said this at least a half a dozen times before but it truly does make you feel better which in turn makes you look better.  During the warm months consuming my weight in water is easy.  It’s this time of year that takes a little more effort.  We’ve been leaving our water pitcher on the counter as opposed to the fridge.  I find it much easier to chug the h2o at room temperature when I am freezing my bum off.
  4. 20 minutes of oil pulling for a month.  (For those of you who do not know, oil pulling is basically swishing around coconut oil in your mouth for 20 minutes and then spitting it out.  It is suppose to remove toxins and whiten teeth among other things.  People swear by it.)  Are there any religious pullers out there?  I have been on and off oil pulling for about a year.  While I have noticed some benefits I am really curious as to what a dedicated month of it would be like.de6810656f6c6df4dc0803dfd3009685
  5. Paint my nails more than once in a blue moon.  Both toes and fingers are in serious need of attention.  Maybe I just need to be on a constant mani and pedi schedule.  Yes, that is exactly what I need.  (A girl can dream can’t she?)
  6. Make more than 2 hair appointments a year.  I have not been in so long it’s frightening.  Ombrè makes me lazy plus almost a whole tube of mascara is required to cover the sparklers in my roots.  Don’t even get me started on the ends…they are just bad.  Going in for a regular trim and color will reset my sanity and keep from having a Britney circa 2007 moment.9c8d5212000010675f9859caa56dd9bd
  7. Do a little something for me every day.  Since Bingham’s arrival I am finding it more difficult than ever to have myself even remotely put together on a daily basis.  More times than not I feel defeated when my dapper husband walks through the door and there I am, sporting a disheveled ponytail, yoga pants and am makeup-less.  Of course he doesn’t care, but I do which is why I need to change it.  Something as simple as a little lip gloss and a fun braid would make me feel 100 times more presentable.  It would also reduce my risk of heart attack when unexpected guests arrive (a legit nightmare for me some days).

So here’s to a New Year of better beauty routines and feeling fabulous!  We are worth it and deserve it after all!

xo,

deals, deals, deals

Last week was undoubtedly a fabulously holly jolly good time.  Just as it should be.  This week is shaping into an exhausting, where are we going to put all this stuff, feeling like a busted can of biscuits, I’m only eating spinach for a month sort of time.  Just as it should be.  My body is clearly angry with me as I woke up with a subconscious screaming “get on that treadmill NOW.”  Sticky on the other hand tried to suck me back into his holiday slug world and convince me that’s it’s not the 1st yet.  As good as the warm blanket and extra snuggle time offer sounded there really wasn’t a choice for me.  Exercise was required if I had a prayer of making it through today half sane.  So ran I did.  It wasn’t my best by any means.  There was terrible heart burn involved in fact, but I did it.  And tomorrow I will do it again (at least that’s what I’m telling myself).

Something that is never hard for me to find motivation for is shopping.  Especially when there are deals involved.  If you have some Christmas money burning a hole in your pocket now is the time to score amazing fashion at even more amazing prices.  Here are a few of my favorite online stores offering killer steals:
