easy diy spider and spider web costumes

diy spider & spider web costumeHalloween is just a few weeks away which can really sneak up on a person. If you are not prepared come trick or treat time you can either A. sift through what is left of the pre-made costumes and pay the price or B. hit up a dollar store and Walmart for TWO quick homemade costumes costing around $15 for both (does not include items you more than likely already own – like the shoes).

I am going to go homemade every single time. It’s in my blood. I’m not sure what it is about crafting a costume that satisfies me…all I know is that it wholeheartedly does.

Always looking for an excuse to make a costume…and considering the popularity of last year’s DIY Batgirl and Batman post…I thought why not share some more easy, last minute, throw together costumes. This time around we went old school with a spider and pretty spider web. These were crafted in less time than it took these two to wake up from their naps one afternoon. That’s my kind of costume!

First up, our little spider:

diy spider & spider web costumeYou will need:

  • black long sleeve shirt
  • black stocking cap (found mine at a dollar store)
  • black women’s socks (the kind that have the “L” shape)
  • 2 eyeballs (found mine at a dollar store)
  • black mittens (dollar store again)
  • gift tissue, plastic bags or newspaper for stuffing
  • a little bit of black ribbon or yarn

You will also need dark pants (black works best but dark denim could work too), shoes, hot glue gun and glue for it.

  1. Stuff each sock with tissue, plastic bags, paper or whatever you have that will stuff a sock. I used one tissue paper for the foot of the sock and another for the part that goes up the leg.
  2. Hot glue (or sew) each sock to back of shirt making 4 “legs”.
  3. Attach each “leg”, starting with the arm of the shirt (because that’s a leg too), by taking ribbon or yarn and hot glueing it to the back of every limb. I left about 4″ of space between each leg.
  4. Take 2 eyeballs and attach to front of the hat with hot glue.
  5. Dress your spider (don’t forget the mittens)!

To make this costume extra sturdy you could sew instead of hot glue. Would be a good idea especially if you have a little one who might tug at the legs. As you can see, Bingham was not really feeling the whole spider gig but the hot glue did hold up even with a few “body throwing on the ground” episodes.

Next up, our pretty spider web:

diy spider & spider web costumeYou will need:

  • 1 1/2 yards of 72″ felt (I used white but black would work too – just make sure you purchase opposite yarn color)
  • black yarn
  • plastic spiders

You will also need black shoes, something for you child to wear under costume, safety pin and a bobby pin or clip to attach spider for hair to.

  1. Fold your felt in half length wise.
  2. Take a pen and tie a piece of yarn measuring 24″ long around it. (This measurement is for a 5T size – adjust by a few inches for smaller or larger.) Place end of yarn not attached to pen in the center middle on folded side of felt. Stretch the pen the length of the yarn and mark a half circle on your felt holding onto the yarn end in the center middle the whole time.
  3. Take a large bowl and trace half circle sections on the rounded line that you marked with the yarn and pen.
  4. Take the same large bowl and place on middle of fold about 2 1/2″ in and trace that half circle (this will be the neck hole).
  5. Now cut following the guide of all the half circles you traced (including the neck).
  6. Unfold the felt and cut a slit up middle of one side only. (This side will be the back.)
  7. Grab your yarn and place one end on point of scallop and run the other all the way up to the neck – cut to length. Do this for every point around the “poncho”. You can space out the neck ends more evenly once you have them all cut to size. Once everything is spaced evenly hot glue each end.
  8. Now take the yarn and start at one open end of cape and run it lengthwise all the way around to the other open end, hot gluing when it intersects each yarn piece from step 7. I did this 3 times, which means I eyeballed the cape being divided by 4 as I was running the yarn around.
  9. Attach a spider to the cape using hot glue. Also attach one to a bobby pin or clip for the hair (if using).
  10. Dress your spider! You can hold the back closed with a bobby pin or hot glue some ribbon on each side and tie shut.

You can make the “web” with puffy paint as well. I am not a huge puffy paint fan so yarn it was for me. You could also get fancy with gems or sparkly embellishments of any sort. A fly would be fun too (I couldn’t find one unfortunately.)

Here is a helpful guide for the spider web poncho:

I have to admit these costumes came out even better than I expected. Jettie absolutely loved hers…while Bing was less impressed (although I love the one image where he is smiling and she looks evil). Little does Bingham know this is just the beginning of costume season. I have big, big plans for him come October 31st.

apple snickerdoodle crumble

Apple Snickerdoodle CrumbleLast week we picked up apples at our favorite local orchard. Sticky asked me what size bag to grab..it’s like he doesn’t know me at all sometimes.

If it’s apple season, and there are freshly picked honeycrisps to be had, I will always get the big bag. Why someone would not is beyond my reasoning. Who couldn’t eat their weight in these apples? Bright, crisp, sweet – it’s everything you want and more in an apple. Plus there is no guessing with a honeycrisp. Good for baking? Yes. Good for eating fresh? Yes. Good for salads? Yes. Good for a person’s last meal? YES!

Apple Snickerdoodle Crumble Apple Snickerdoodle CrumbleNow the dilemma was what exactly to do with my bag of apple perfection. Of course I saved a ton for eating immediately but I did reserve a few for recipe testing. Jettie and I are working on an oven pancake that is good but not quite blog ready. This crumble however, it is ready. Sooooo ready…to get in your belly and make you a happy apple consuming human being.

Apple Snickerdoodle Crumble Apple Snickerdoodle CrumbleLike most crumbles there is not a lot of fuss to this. With that said we are baking with super crisp apples so we do need to precook them a bit. Not a big deal since we can have that going while the batter is mixing.

Ever wonder what makes a snickerdoodle a snickerdoodle? Simply think they are super yum and really don’t care why? I am with you. But I did assume it had something to do with the cream of tarter so I looked it up just to be sure. Besides the classic cinnamon/sugar outer texture of a classic snickerdoodle, there is a small amount of cream of tarter to add a distinctive tang and to keep the sugar in the batter from crystallizing. Therefor making the perfect pillowy, chewy snickerdoodle.

Still don’t care? Me neither. I just know that doodles are good and this crumble is snickerdoodle apple paradise.

Apple Snickerdoodle CrumbleGenerally one would top a warm crumble with ice cream but we rarely have any on hand because…well…it simply wouldn’t work out for me and my waistline. I did however have leftover salted caramel sauce in the fridge (because that’s not fattening at all, right?!). Of course it made for a lovely topping to my crumble, but what would have been even better was some ice cream to go along with it.

Maybe, no definitely, next time!

Enjoy!

boost your mood

On paper October should be a wonderful a month. It doesn’t get much better than the prettiness going on outside right now, and these cooler pre-arctic deep freeze temps are what fall wardrobe dreams are made of.

That said, some of us humans (or maybe more specifically Americans) seemingly think all the best times of the year need to be jam packed with everything under the sun and then some. This can be an adrenaline booster for many (um…guilty) but at some point the tank will hit “E” and a wave of overwhelm will knock us right on our busy little booty.

I have been hit by that wave a few times already this month. Between everything we have going on, sickness hitting our home and the amount of work trips Sticky has scheduled, it’s often hard to bypass those “I am about to lose my mind” moments. Worse yet, if I don’t actually have my little crazy moment the miserable grump monster will make her appearance. Stink-eyeing the world and causing others to walk on eggshells around her…

Attitude can make all the difference in any situation, including the overwhelming ones. We all know that getting some fresh air, deep breaths, a quick set of jumping jacks or a power nap can boost ones mood. In my quest for more options I discovered some other ways that just may work as well:

  • Force a Smile – frowning and burrowing those eyebrows is a lot of work for your face muscles which causes tension. Smiling, even a fake one, is a much more relaxing act for your face to perform. (I worked at Disney back in the day so I got this one down.)
  • Get Creative – grab your kids crayons, watercolors, markers, whatever and create your ass off. Even if you do not have an artistic bone in your body that simple act of getting something in your mind on paper is incredibly releasing. Drawing monsters with Jettie lately has been my favorite mood booster. It really works!
  • Smell His Dirty Laundry – say what???!!! Admit it ladies, you like the smell of your mans dirty shirts (well, as long as he didn’t run a marathon in them..gross). That smell can provide comfort that you may be lacking when your guy is away from home. Which article of clothing you smell is totally your thing…there is no judging here.
  • Get Chatty – this sounds simple enough but honestly this is an incredibly difficult one for me (as it may be for a lot of you out there as well). First and foremost I have trust issues, making pouring my heart out nearly impossible. Second of all, the times that I have laid it all out on the line I feel this instant sense of regret because A. The other person doesn’t know what to say or B. They now know just how crazy I am and will go tell others. (Again, trust issues.) I do feel very fortunate that I am married to one of the best set of ears I know, but of course I am always waiting for the right time. Sometimes randomly stealing 5 minutes of those ears during a work day is exactly what I need to lift that heavy cloud. We have an understanding that these moments are not intended to bring his day down, that’s the last thing I would want to do. And of course I am that ear for him when he needs it as well. (Bonus, Sticky is pretty sexy when he’s fired up.)
  • Visual Happiness – a great way to get your mind off something ugly is to look at something unbelievably happy. Wedding albums sure do come in handy here. Or any documented special day. This is also why we need some of our memories printed. Grabbing your phone and flipping through images does not have the same effect as picking up an album that you don’t touch on a regular basis. 5 minutes of going back in time to a day of bliss will make your mind bubble over in those good endorphins.
  • Make a List, Force Organization – many times we feel down or overwhelmed because we start and end our day with chaos. Putting it all down on paper allows our mind to develop a plan. And the act of crossing things off the list give us the accomplishment we need. I am sure a great many of you already do this, and I do to an extent but am learning that listing everything, not just work related items, makes my day feel a lot less crazy.
  • Say It Out loud and Tell It to Leave – a bad situation can get stuck in our brain, rearing it’s ugly head and raising havoc on what should be a perfectly fantastic day. Often times it’s relationships, what someone did or said – or didn’t do or didn’t say, that really causes the problems. We can’t change anyone else’s actions or thoughts, but we do have the power to change our own. Say what you want to say to your dog (or cat, or tree, or whatever) and leave it there. Sometimes uttering words like “We are done with that now.” is the release our life needs. Writing works too, but then there’s evidence so pen carefully. (Let’s face it, there are some things only the dog should know.)

Hopefully there are a couple things in there that will help you get out of a rut mood. If not simply picture me fake smiling and sniffing Sticky’s dirty laundry. That’s got to be good for something.

dress style

Every season there seems to be one piece that will frequent my instagram feed more than any other. Lately I have been seeing this red saffron Old Navy shirt dress almost daily. There is no denying it is beautiful with an easy to wear shape. The length is just right and the pattern is interesting without being too busy. To say I am tempted is putting it lightly…and while I do not own this pretty little number yet, I thought it might be fun to style her in 2 different and easy ways:

old navy red saffron dress fall 2015

Old Navy Dress/1Forever 21 olive fedora/2H&M faux fur vest/3Charles by Charles David over the knee boot/4H&M burgundy cardigan/5H&M scarf/6Chinese Laundry split suede boot

The first look is a slightly dressier yet still comfortable with the flat heeled over the knee boot. The second is a bit more cozy with the added surprise of an additional pattern in the scarf. Both are super simple to throw on..and instagram ready.

Be sure to tag #PPJstyle if you end up rocking this dress yourself!

apple cider moscow mule

Apple Cider Moscow MuleYeah…these are pretty. Damn delicious too. The perfect “sit on your booty and  enjoy” fall cocktail.

I have become  somewhat obsessed with caramel vodka. For good reason too.. I mean, who doesn’t love a little kick with their caramel? And moscow mules.. well, they are a close favorite to sangria (it might even be a tie). What I love about this version is the ginger beer in a classic mule already plays beautifully with cider. While the caramel wraps it all up in sweet, warm hug.

Apple Cider Moscow Mule Apple Cider Moscow MuleOh how I love photographing cocktails! Especially outdoors, under falling leaves. Thank you to the season of fall for existing – people go on and on and on about you but let’s face it, you are straight up the best!

Apple Cider Moscow MuleIf a mule isn’t your thing (say what??!!) check out my recent Caramel Apple Sangria post. Just as easy as this mule and equally as delicious.

Cheers!
