yoga newbie

Believe it or not yoga was not an exercise I was even remotely interested in trying until recently. My reasoning for this was simple – I like action. I want to jump, lunge and run over and over again until I can’t jump, lunge or run anymore. Yoga always seemed too slow paced for me…with a lot of focus on breathing and poses. There was no way I could shut my mind off enough to simply think about breathing and where my arms and legs are positioned. That is until I tried it once…and now, well you could say I am intrigued.

What sparked my interest in said exercise? Mostly looking to mix things up in my regular workout routine and admittedly Giada de Laurentiis (slightly red-faced fessing up to this). I have always been curious how she can love pasta, cheese and chocolate as much as she does yet maintains an incredibly lean figure. Of course I am well aware that A. she may not really eat much of all those things, B. she has a personal trainer and C. (the obvious one) she is on the extremely lean side – definitely not for everyone. But with all that being said, every article I have ever read about Giada has her doting over yoga. One in particular claimed that she used to be a gym rat but now only does 3 1-hour sessions of yoga a week with some hiking mixed in here and there. For whatever reason I never forgot reading that…or maybe the reason is that I subconsciously wanted some yoga in my life. And that is why we are here.

What I know about yoga: nothing. I mean yes, there’s breathing and posing and centering…but the reality is I know nothing. My experience thus far involves this beginner video which shockingly I have enjoyed using the past few weeks:

71wTWu8aZnL._SL1443_What surprises me even more is how refreshed I feel after a mere 20 minute session. All that focus on breathing really does center a person. As far as the posing…well, let’s just say I have a ways to go (especially considering this is a beginner video).

I want to know more though, which is why I am turning to any and all yoga experts out there. DVDs I can do at home are vital for me – it’s simply easier with my schedule and the kids. Sticky did give me Jillian’s Yoga Inferno (which I am terrified to try) but I am wondering what other DVDs would be ideal for a newbie like me. As well as any youTubers worth following. Any and all advice is welcome – I am sure there are others out there interested in learning more as well. (Considering most yoga-obsessors I have seen are in amazing shape – we would love to know your secrets!)

As far as working out in general is going, it has been a rough 7 days or so. I blame all the party craziness. It takes a lot of willpower to do something for myself, like exercise, when I have a plate the size Mount Rushmore I could be doing instead. But those times are the ones where we need to remind ourselves that the plate will clear faster and more efficiently if we take care of our body, mind and soul first. I am pretty good about staying on track, but that reminder took some extra pushing this past week for sure. And it feels good to have pushed through it.

Here’s to taking care of “us” and loving it (not feeling guilty over it)!

rain gear

With the way our weather has been going the past few weeks – monsoon in Ohio – I was prepared for the inevitable rain come Bing’s party. Even with a 10 day forecast claiming 0% chance of precipitation, I knew better than to get my hopes up. Well wouldn’t you know Bingham got himself one of the few sunny, summer days we have had all month. What a lucky little man.

More on the party later, but for now let’s talk about rain gear. Or basically everyday gear for those of us experiencing all this wet weather. Bad news is I’m not sure we will be drying out anytime soon…good news is rain gear is crazy cute. My absolute must have item is a clear bubble umbrella – that totes one with the stripe trim (#5) is impossible not to love. And glossy red Hunters…well, those are always on my wish list:

food for the 4th

When it comes to party food I follow the rule of thirds. As in 1/3 store-bought, 1/3 assemble only and 1/3 homemade. For Bingham’s party I decided to go homemade with the pretzels.

And I am sort of hating myself right now…

pretzelsAre they pretty? Yes. Are the hard to make? No. Is it fun to make batch after batch after batch after batch?  Ugh.

This is why I do not bake for a living. An hour in and I am covered in flour, too hot from the oven being on and so over the smell of pretzel. (And I LOVE pretzels!) Let’s not even talk about the ginormous mess in my kitchen. It’s not pretty in here guys, not at all.

Good news is I am close to completing my pretzel quota. Bad news is I have 2 other items on my homemade list. 1/2 store-bought is starting to sound really good right about now…

After we celebrate Bingham my mind will be thinking about the upcoming holiday weekend and what will be on our must make list (not pretzels). The 4th screams for bold, bright flavors that won’t weigh you down. I have rounded up some recipes to consider, including a few PPJ favorites of course:

What will you be making this 4th?

plum cake

Easy Plum CakeIt’s been a good 4 years since I first made Smitten Kitchen’s strawberry summer cake and fell in easy, breezy cake recipe love. Back then it never dawned on me that turning on the oven and baking a cake could end up in such a refreshing treat. But it does…and for that my family is extremely grateful.

Easy Plum CakePlums are one of Jettie’s favorite fruits. While shopping the other day she asked “Mommy, are the plums on sale?” She said it so sweetly with a mountain of hope in her big, beautiful eyes – I really didn’t give a darn if they were on sale. Jeannie was getting her plums.

As we turned the corner she saw the big red sign and said “I think they are!!!” 3 seconds later I had a bag full of plums busting at the seams. She was happy, I was happy – it was a warm fuzzy moment for the memory bank.

Of course now we had an overload of plums. And cake sounded like a really good place for some of them to end up in. Typically she eats hers fresh, but she seemed more than okay with this way after one bite.

Easy Plum CakeThis cake is beautiful and delicious as is – out of the oven and cooled. The powdered sugar though, it does make everything a little sweeter, and prettier…and just more fun.

Easy Plum CakeLight and fluffy cake surrounding slightly tart yet perfectly sweet plums. This. Is. Good.

Easy Plum Cake Easy Plum Cake Easy Plum CakeHere is the thing about me and summer cake – I love, love, love it cold. Any cake straight out of the fridge makes my heart happy – but fruit cake in particular really gets me going. I may also throw a little extra powdered sugar on top, but we don’t need to talk about that.

Enjoy!

  • ¼tsp salt
  • ¼cup vegetable oil
  • 1tsp vanilla

  2. Place eggs and sugar in a mixer attached with a paddle and mix on high speed until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Meanwhile whisk together flour, baking powder and salt in a small bowl.
  3. Once eggs and sugar have reached their pale, fluffy consistency, turn mixer down to medium and slowly add oil and vanilla. Turn mixer to low and add flour mixture. Mix until incorporated (being careful not to over mix).
  4. Fold plum slices into batter and pour into prepared pan. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until golden and toothpick inserted in middle comes out clean. Allow to cool completely in pan before serving. Dust with powdered sugar for a little extra sweetness if desired. Enjoy!

a little bit patriotic

If you run into me this week be warned that I am in psycho birthday party mode. Something about these 1st birthdays make me a little nutty. (I’ll never forget the look on the cake guy’s face when I ordered a very specific design for Jettie’s birthday – and came back a week later for reassurance that we were on all the same page. Yeah, they hated me.) I honestly thought Bing’s would be on the less crazy side, since I have already done this once before. But no…I am a planning, crafting, let’s make this the most fabulous NYC theme birthday party wacko the world ever did see. Thank goodness my man and the rest of family put up with me. The really do love me…clearly.

Not gonna lie, it has totally slipped my mind that the 4th is coming up (or as Sticky now refers to…party recovery). But our favorite red, white and blue holiday is less than 2 weeks away. Here are a few simple ways to show your patriotism on America’s birthday:
