caramel apple cider floats

The tree’s in our front yard are perfectly speckled with yellow, orange and deep red.  Cold weather may be on its way but this weekend was pure fall perfection, so we decided to take full advantage and visit the pumpkin patch to score a few pumpkins.  The last few years we have had intentions of taking Adelynn out to Lincoln Ridge, but with weddings and baking season starting we never made good on those intentions.  Locke has been a sweet reminder of many things, but we are done letting things that don’t matter get in the way of things that really, really do.  Like pumpkin patches in October.

There is something about the crisp air this time of year that makes you feel so alive.  As we raced around a make-shift peddle-style go cart track, the four of us, we laughed harder than we have in months.  In that moment I realized that the weight on my shoulders is lifted… nowhere to be found.  These memories will forever be precious to me.

Day by day we are settling back into the grooves of “normal” life, whatever our new “normal” may be.  Locke is so easy-going- and he thinks that carrier is pretty fabulous (he snoozes through most of our outings!).  Still pinching ourselves that we have the opportunity to make these memories with him.

Now on to some deliciousness…

Had it been the peak of fall while I was pregnant instead of the peak of summer- these cider floats would have been insanely dangerous.  (Who am I kidding, they are still insanely dangerous.)  This summer all I craved was hot fudge milkshakes.  This mix of caramel swirl ice cream, honeycrisp apple slices, apple cider and spice just kicked my hot fudge milkshakes booty.

On top of all of their apple-ly goodness, they are insanely easy to throw together.  Chop some apples, scoop some ice cream, pour some cider, top with nutmeg and cinnamon- you’re done!  Now I just need to get Brandy to make us all a spiked version….

hair hues for fall

A few weeks ago we talked about resetting the beauty button with a cute cut for fall.  Now it’s time to talk about my favorite part of having a head of hair – fresh color!  This past spring and summer we saw a lot of brunettes go platinum and blondes go pastel.  Now is the time to come back to the dark side with hints of those lighter tresses.  I am loving all the rich tones loaded with dimension.  And those bold colors, if I had the cojones I would be all over them (yes, I said cojones).  Here are some hues I can’t take my eyes off of:

fall_2014_hair_color_trends_11Hello Highlights Jen’s hair is always on point.  This dark version with lighter, warm pieces around the face would be incredibly flattering on most skin tones. 2Dark Chestnut Brown some girls simply rock brunette without needing tons of highlights (like Shan).  I love the way the light picks up those subtle hints of lighter brown hidden in the dark overall color. 3Ashy Highlights icy strands of blonde layered with a cooler brown is one of my favorite looks for fall.  This especially looks gorgeous on a natural blonde with blue eyes. 4Bronde honey meets brown and they fall in and and get married.  If you are into a warmer toned blonde/light brown this is for you. 5Deep Plum loving the switch to bolder more dramatic out of the ordinary shades for fall.  6Fire Red yes, red is alot of upkeep.  But if you have the skin tone for this beyond fabulous shade I would think the maintenance would be worth it, especially for just a season.

Have you switched up the program for fall yet?  Would love to know what color you are rocking (or craving)!

diy batman and batgirl costume

Saturday we celebrated Locke’s ONE MONTH birthday!  (Insert big smiles and cartwheels here.)  A few days before the event Shan settled on a superhero theme, obviously very fitting for her tough little man.  Never one to be a party pooper in the participation department, I had to come armed with a couple of superheros of my own.  Wanting to keep things simple I used clothes we already owned and a few easily purchased items.  After a few cuts of the scissors and a lot of hot glue we had ourselves a Batgirl and “baby” Batman.  Really cute ones if you ask me.

BATGIRL:

diy batgirl costumeYou will need:

Mask:  Print Batgirl mask on cardstock and cut out using scissors.  Trace mask on back of foam glitter paper (be sure to use space effectively so you can cut out logos using same sheet) and cut out using scissors.  Measure elastic to fit snug around head, hot glue elastic to each end of back of mask.

Headband: Print ear template on cardstock (same template as cuffs) and cutout using scissors.  Trace ear on black felt (will need 4 ears) and cut out.  Attach ears to head band (2 pieces each ear) using hot glue.  Cut off access ear underneath band.

Logos: Print logo template twice on cardstock.  Cut small and medium ovals out of one, and small and medium bats out of the other (the large is a bonus in case you are making an adult size).  Trace ovals onto yellow felt and cut out.  Trace bats onto back of glitter foam paper and cut out.  Attach bats to center of oval using hot glue.

Belt: Cut 2.5″ strip out of yellow felt.  Measure length to fit child’s waist – leaving about a 1/2″ gap.  Take 2 pieces of 2″ in length elastic and hot glue on ends of the inside of belt (adjust so that it is a snug fit on child).  Hot glue small logo on the center front of belt.

Leotard: Hot glue, velcro or sew logo to center of leotard.

Cape:  Layer the two fabrics and fold in half.  Cut to desired length of cape.  Cut the below shape out of folded fabric (the red is where you cut – use your eyeballs, you can do it!):

diy_cape_1Starting at the bottom left, place a bowl and trace half of it on fabric.  Repeat that all the way up red curved line and straight red line (not the smaller red curve and fold line).  Cut the trace lines out (this makes the bat “scallop” effect).  Open fabric and admire your cape!  Attach to leotard using safety pins, by sewing or velcro (make sure you use the fabric kind and attach correctly).

Boots: Clean boots, cover zipper with tape and fill with paper or plastic bags and spray outside evenly with yellow paint.  Let dry and remove tape.

Cuffs:   Print cuff template on cardstock and cut out cuff and claw using scissors.  Trace onto felt (2 cuffs, 4 claws).  Cut out and hot glue 2 claws together (claws stand out better if layered as opposed to one layer of felt).  Fold 1 cuff in half (how it would fit on child) and place claw in widest opening.  Hot glue claw in as well as cuff – leaving a space at bottom large enough for child to fit hand through.  Repeat with second cuff.

Dress your Batgirl (tights go on first)!

“Baby” BATMAN:

diy batman costumeYou will need:

  • grey onesie
  • grey tights
  • black diaper cover
  • black felt
  • yellow felt
  • 1/4″ black elastic
  • 1 sheet black glitter foam paper
  • black performance knit for cape (I used scrap from Jettie’s cape)

Mask, Log and Belt:  Same as above costume except mask was made out of felt (help avoid glitter all over baby) and no logo on belt (belt is only 1″ in width).

Cape: Simply cut a rectangle out of fabric to size and pin, velcro or sew onto onesie.

Bat your baby up!

diy batman costumeI know what you are thinking….”It must be nice that she already has her kids Halloween costumes done.”  And of course I could very well send these kids on their merry trick-or-treating way in these ensembles.  But that wouldn’t be me…(and we already have a Rammel/Maxey group costume planned that I am very very excited about.)  These would however make fabulous last minute DIY costumes for your little ones!  You can also alter for adult versions.  Mostly have fun with it and do not take any of the details too perfectly or seriously.  It is a costume after all – nothing but fun should be had in the creating of it.

these things

This past weekend it was brought to our attention that “Jettie Spaghetti” made it on the ever so popular viralnova site.  She is in good company, yes, but we are biased towards that bowl of noodles with meatballs:

spaghetti_baby_costumeThere is a short, fat butternut squash setting on our kitchen counter begging to be ate.  But what to make it into is the question…some options I am pondering:

And last but certainly not least….fall.  It’s beauty is impossible not to be mesmerized by:

Locke. 4 weeks old

trisomy_13_locke_1
These milestones just keep getting sweeter.  4 weeks ago today we welcomed this handsome little man into the world.  We had no idea if we would have even two minutes with him.. and here we sit four weeks later, pinching ourselves.  He has truly taught us so many things- for me, the greatest of those is letting go of fear, and living every single day with a grateful heart.

trisomy_13_locke_2

We are spending our time with Locke the only way that makes sense.  Capturing every little moment, making as many memories as we can, savoring every gaze we get into those deep, soulful eyes.  His calm spirit has reminded us over and over again to not be afraid.. there is truly so much joy in this journey.

trisomy_13_locke_3

Locke overall is doing so well.  He is slowly gaining a bit of weight and growing (he is up to 5 lbs 9 oz!) and is getting stronger every day.  We have seen our first apnea scare, but have not had another, and a hernia that developed two weeks ago has not changed- so those things are good.  Things could change at any moment, so we are living in today.  Every single day is a true miracle.

trisomy_13_locke_4
On Saturday we are having a one month birthday celebration for our little guy (Super Hero style, of course), and we couldn’t be more excited to gather with family and friends.  Please continue to pray for many, many more days with Locke.  Our hearts have felt the presence of prayer from the beginning of our journey, and we certainly feel it now.
