trisomy awareness month

Last year, March was the month that we announced, dressed in green, that we were expecting again.  This year March represents something that is much bigger than us and our story- it is the story of every family that has been touched by Trisomy, the story of babies, like Locke, who are dear, and special, and rare.

In the last year we have connected with so many families that like us, were the 1 in 10,000 statistic.  I would log onto the facebook support group and scroll through the feed just crying.  So many, “we just returned from our ultrasound”, “we just got our diagnosis”, “we just said goodbye”.  Over and over, my heart would shatter and I would think I know just how you feel.  They are all searching for the same thing.. a cure, a remedy, someone to tell them that it was all just a bad dream.  But there, among the fears and confusions there is something else you will find if you look hard enough.. undeniable, unconditional love.  A universal agreement that blessings flow from these short, sweet lives.  A connection of people who understand Trisomy better than any statistic you can find.

The purpose of trisomy awareness month is just that- to make others aware.  Trisomy means “three”- individuals with trisomy have three copies of each chromosome instead of two.  There are many kinds of trisomy- the most common being 21 (down syndrome), 18, and 13.  Our Locke had Trisomy 13.

So- what is Trisomy 13?

  • the result from having three copies of chromosome 13 in each cell in the body instead of the usual two copies
  • occurs in 1 in 16,000 live births
  • most cases of trisomy are thought to be a “fluke” that occurs when cells divide at conception, not hereditary, although it can be passed on if you carry a translocation
  • 80% have full trisomy, meaning that every cell in the body is effected (Locke had full)
  • traits are often picked up in ultrasound because there is a very recognizable pattern of physical features such as cleft lip and palate, extra fingers or toes, brain and spinal cord abnormalities, heart defects, hair whorls due to irregular brain development, kidney and other organ abnormalities and many, many others
  • survival rate is very low, less than 5% make it to their first birthday, and many do not live beyond the first days of life due to central apnea, lung development issues, feeding and reflux issues

What can you do?

Spread hope.

The day you receive a hard diagnosis is, in my opinion, one of the worst days of the entire journey.  Allowing myself to let go of the vision of our family that I had imagined took time.  Once I accepted that things were going to be different I realized that making his life full was in turn making our, and everyone around our lives full.  There is truly so much beauty to be found in this journey.

Remember.

Talking about the life of a lost child is one of the greatest gifts you can give a grieving parent.  There is nothing that makes Locke’s memory more alive than hearing about how he is on the minds and hearts of others, still.

Support.

I can’t tell you how many times we heard “I just didn’t know what to say”.  That may be the case, and thats okay.  But say something.  Even if it’s just “I’m here”.

Educate and advocate.

Understanding what trisomy is has been a solid foundation for me.  To make the best decisions for Locke we educated ourselves as much as we possibly could about each of his conditions.  Being a voice for hard things, like trisomy, and loss, can change someone’s decision to carry to term and can be the light that they need.

Love well.

Nothing in this life is permanent.  Love well.  Squeeze your babies a little tighter, be a bit more patient, and don’t wish away your time with them.. it is so precious.  When you think to complain about something like the extra five pounds you could loose, or your lack of sleep… please remember how many empty arms there are around you.  Please remember how fragile their hearts are.

national pancake day

So apparently yesterday was National Pancake Day, which I happened to discover after making pancakes for breakfast (lucky!).  If you missed it- don’t sweat.  No one will be mad at you for making pancakes today instead.  Can we just make every day a pancake celebration?

Here are six fabulous pancake recipes, from six of my favorite foodie bloggers that you really can’t live without:

National Pancake Day March 3rd

1. Gingerbread Pancakes by Creme De La Crumb 2. Maple Bacon Pancakes by A Thousand Threads  3. Lemon Poppyseed Pancakes by Joy The Baker   4. Old Fashioned Pancakes by Rachel Schultz (these are my favorite basic pancake ever!)  5. Chocolate Chip Banana Pancakes by Crazy for Crust  6. Tiramisu Pancakes by A Dash of Soul.

And I know what you’re thinking- Brandy is posting about getting your booty off the couch to work out, and I’m feeding you stacks of pancakes.  Oops.

XO,

wake up running

Bear with me, I’ve got fitness on the mind.  Rolling your eyes?  Can’t say I blame you. It is my typical reaction as well.  But now, for whatever reason, I want to talk about moving, staying motivated and not quitting.  Putting it out there is a nice little kick in the booty for me (and hopefully one or two of you).

We talked about the 21 days and how hard yet so rewarding it is to make it through that initial hurdle.  Now let’s talk AM hours.  Yes, I said you need to be flexible with when you workout and you do.  But if you are anything like me, nothing, and I mean nothing, feels better than getting that workout done first thing in the morning.  It’s the act of getting out of bed that is the real struggle.

So let’s talk strategy.  What can we do to ensure those feet hit the floor over another press of the snooze button?  Here are a few things that just may help:

Dressed to Sweat  The act of simply looking for your workout clothes can add 10 minutes to your morning schedule.  10 minutes of talking yourself out of bothering with those clothes at all…hence not working out.  You can do one of two things here….1 Sleep in your workout clothes.  Everything but the shoes.  (Unless that’s your thing of course.) That way you just throw sneaks on and BAM you are ready to move.  2 Choose and set all your workout clothes neatly beside your bed and put those on first thing after waking.  You have now already taken some of the “think” out of your day.  This is my preferred method because I need to sleep in jammies.  And for whatever reason need to wear fresh clothes before sweating.

Eat Something How anyone gets in a full workout on an empty stomach is beyond my comprehension.  Even if you do not like eating first thing in the morning, a little bit of something in your belly really helps your body during the strain of exercise.  It can be as simple as half a banana (my go to).  That and a some water will keep your tummy from hating you.

Annoying Buddy Find someone who will not fall for your “I’ll workout later” tactics.  Make them annoy the crap out of you until you get out of bed.  Obviously if they sleep in the same bed with you it’s ideal.  But even a buddy who will call or text can do wonders.  You will hate them for brief moments, yes, but in the long run you will think they are awesome (and who doesn’t want to be awesome?).

Get Some Space Between You and the Alarm If all it takes to press “snooze” is a quick motion of the arm than you’re more than likely going to do it.  If you have to actually walk to the snooze button then you’ll begin to lose the urge to snooze during that journey.  It is incredibly irritating but really works.

Written Pep Talk Write down a quote, thought or feeling that gets you going.  Keep it beside your bed, or under your pillow.  Pull it out when you begin to talk yourself out of leaving those warm and cozy covers.  For me it is always motivating to tell my head that I have the choice of feeling amazing in an hour or like a slug covered in dog poo.   That’s a no brainer most days.

Slowly but surely my workouts are inching back up to those early AM hours.  Even Sticky is finding it easier to peel himself out of his slumber for a good run on the treadmill.  Hopefully in a couple of months we won’t need so much help in the motivation department.  But as the say….

See you in the morning!

hello march, hello green

I thought I heard a lawnmower today – excitedly looked out the window for it and everything.  That’s right, despite the 5 plus inches of snow we received yesterday I thought, for a split second, that someone was mowing their lawn.  Even Bingham thinks I’ve lost it.

It’s March, the escape from this frozen tundra has got to be just around the corner.  And if it isn’t at least there’s a fun holiday in the middle of the month.  One filled with merriment, brew and a fantastic color.  Our friend Vicki recently sent me a pic of some pretty green New Balance’s she was crushing on and it hit me how little green I have seen of late.  After doing a quick browse on the internet I am sad to report that it’s slim pickings out there.  Good news is I round up some of the best of what I did find (including a little something for the guys!):

blog crush

Blue and black.  The dress in the crappy image is blue and black.  The end.

It’s freaking Friday people!  Better than that my man is done with his docent duty!  If you are thinking  “What the heck is docent duty” you are not alone.  Officially google says this – a person who acts as a guide, typically on a voluntary basis, in a museum, art gallery, or zoo.  Unofficially I say “It’s what Charlotte does after her split with Trey on SATC.”  Only people obsessed with the show, with a freakish memory to boot, understand my explanation.

So what is it I’ll do with a weekend where my better half is available for kid duty?  Nap.  A lot.  (Yeah, I don’t buy that either.)  I’d also like to start reading again – you know, something other than “Penny Sets Up Shop” (although it is a fabulous book about an entrepreneurial little girl).  Simply catching up on a few blogs would be nice.  Here are current faves worth my undivided attention, even if for only 10 minutes:

blogs to followMerrick’s Art she’s a stylist, she’s a seamstress, she’s a momma of two adorable little men.  Her projects are not overwhelming and in general she seems very down to earth.  Plus she has a fabulous name – that’s a win in my book.//Bon Appètempt I can’t even remember what led me to Amelia’s book yesterday but I am so grateful it did.  Another mom with a fabulously fun way of approaching life and scary recipes.  I want to invite her to my messy home to talk food.//Simply Sadie Jane or maybe Sadie Does It All should be more appropriate.  She talks about everything from fashion to parenting to home decorating to her fitness journey (and so much more).  An inspiration for anyone trying to figure out this whole lifestyle blog world.

Happy Weekend Friends!
