french drugstore products

In honor of Bastille Day I did a little digging to find out what French women purchase from their drugstores….Why? Because they are walking around with their long legs and effortless style sporting natural hair and a bare yet completely chic face. I need to know how this is achieved. I mean, they throw on red lipstick and a little mascara with zero foundation and that is their most made up look. Me on the other hand…let’s just say the coconut oil receives a heavy hit when I wash my face after a night on the town.

Here is what I understand about French vs American beauty – they focus much more on a steady skincare routine and far less on makeup. They believe in sticking to a regimen and not bouncing from one product to another. (And apparently they have been using essential oils for like ever.)

While there are many, and I mean many, products I would love to try these are the top 5 that stood out to me:

071415_french_beauty_products1NUXE Huile Prodigieuse Multi-Purpose Dry Oil – a moisturizer for your entire body including your hair. Said to leave skin and hair soft and smooth while leaving a beautiful scent. The French believe in a little perfume in their locks and this is one of their favorite ways to apply it./2Bioderma Crealine H2O Micelle Solution – a gentle and effective cleanser for removing dirt and makeup, including eye makeup. No unnatural foamy solutions here – this is the all natural way to safely remove the day from your face./3Avene Thermal Spring water spray – water in a can that you spray on your face…literally. The one and only ingredient is water, and as far as I can tell everyone uses it. I have to admit of everything I read about this makes me most curious. Boasting that is soothes and evens the complexion while leaving the skin feeling super hydrated. I just may have to order myself a can of “miracle” water spray./4NUXE Rêve de Miel Ultra-Nourishing Lip Balm – if you are going to go bare faced then you have to make sure your smackers are in check. This balm protects and repairs will leaving the lips soft and smooth./5La Roche-Posay Anthelios 60 Melt-In Sunscreen Milk – since many French women wear minimal foundation they are going to need a great sunscreen to throw on. This is reported to melt into the skin without leaving a greasy residue. Also moisturizes and makes a great base for a little blush.

Which product would you love to try?

her cutout style | alicia

Ever since shooting Alicia’s maternity style 2 years ago… holy crap I can’t believe it’s been that long… I have been chomping at the bit to feature her again. This time she wasn’t pregnant, and that itty bitty baby is now one of the most adorable toddlers on the planet (and just so happens to be a mini me of his handsome dad).

Alicia and I have one of those friendships where we can go a very long time without talking and then randomly send a text as if we were just chatting on the phone. Girls simply do not come more laid back or cooler than this one. She is my crazy baby name bouncer offer and “Could I pull this off?” fashion cohort. I have said it before and I’ll say it again – this girl has style. She takes risks yet it comes off effortless. Which leads me to this jumpsuit…

A little over a month ago I spied a jumpsuit on ASOS and instantly thought Alicia. I wasn’t sure what her reaction would be as a mere 2 months prior we were turning our noses up at all the wide leg culottes out there. Like fashion often goes though, the trend grew on us and Alicia agreed she needed this jumpsuit.  (Yes, we know it’s not an “official” culotte but it’s close.)  Wouldn’t you know she does look fabulous in this white denim one piece…but was there ever really a question?

Alicia recently returned to the dark side with her hair color…the color is absolutely gorgeous. She looked great blonde but I’ll always know her as a brunette, and love seeing it back in action.

No this is not a celebrity family, I swear. They just happen to look fabulous all the freakin’ time! How about that Shooter? GAH – right?! He is too stylin’ for words. I am definitely taking how to dress a boy pointers from his pretty momma.

springer_family_1Thank you Springers for the quick photo shoot! Alicia – I hope you are having the most fabulous of adventures in Italy right now. My ear and a cocktail are eagerly waiting for your return.

these six

071015_thesethings

1About a billion years ago my mom gave me a Mickey Mouse toaster for Christmas. It is the best worst toaster a girl could ever own. I’ve had this thing longer than Sticky. At first, I wasn’t sure. It played “Zippity Doo Dah” every time the toast would pop up for crying out loud. To my delight that feature broke soon after use, unfortunately it’s toasting ability was never good and has quite possibly worsened over time. I absolutely do not care. Because every now and then we receive a perfect Mickey head & hand on almost perfectly toasted bread. Today was on of those mornings./2There is a Starbucks on State St in Fort Wayne, IN that blows me away with it’s customer service every visit. Today was no exception. I had to wait a mere 30 seconds longer than usual for my iced latte – in that 30 seconds the barista decided Jettie needed ice water and a cookie straw on the house. Completely unnecessary and utterly kind. You go Starbucks./3Bing has yet to regularly say “Ma-ma-ma-ma” but he is saying more and it is ADORABLE. “Bub-ba, Bub-ba, Bub-ba” is a new favorite. If you can get him to say it prepare to smile huge./4This morning I took two kiddos for two wellness checks and two rounds of vaccinations. I really thought it would be a disaster but it didn’t even come close. (That toast – I’m telling you it was a sign.)/5Tomorrow is our itty bitty town’s 1st Annual Duck Derpy (with Eats on the Streets and Art from the Fort). That’s right Wassenberg, I said annual. We have watched this town blossom in a positive direction and it warms my soul.  This event is a direct reflection of some amazing individuals who care about Van Wert and most importantly it’s community. I’m proud, I’m excited and I want my ducky to win! If you live near us you will not want to miss out! (You may even see me and my man slinging some drinks at one of the gardens!)/6Doctor’s appointments always end in a trip to Target. You know, the place where you can buy diapers and also look at fun wine while waiting for a prescription. While I was better than normal with my spending (willpower must have been in full force) I couldn’t pass up a new blend. Especially one called “Handsome Devil”.

That was a long these things…the wine must be making me chatty.

Happy Weekend Everyone!

bingham’s nyc 1st birthday bash

NYC theme kids birthdayI heart NYC. Like really HEART NYC. Anyone who knows me for even just a day knows this. Naturally, when it came time to plan a 1st birthday party for our Binger boy I was in a “New York State of Mind.”

Okay, no more NY verses, cliches or quotes. (Yeah right.)

In all serious though this party theme makes my heart happy on so many levels I can barely take it. From the cardboard buildings to the kids running around with “I heart NY” tats – it was everything I had hoped for in a big apple bash and so much more. This one was work – a lot of it. But so was Jettie’s 1st birthday. Maybe its the amount of people or maybe it’s the pressure to make the first one just so. Regardless I would do it all over again in a millisecond.

Now about those buildings…aren’t they fab? Simply roll white primer paint onto cardboard boxes, then paint in the colors you want (if you don’t want white of course). End with the accents by using a sponge brush and black paint. You will want to stack the boxes before you paint so you know which boxes go with which (mark the bottoms to make keeping track easier). When you are done you can attach your buildings with a lot of glue using a glue gun. To ensure you do not have a falling building incident, you will want to place a heavy object in the bottom one (such as a hand weight or sandbag).

Guests were greeted with our version of the Empire State Building (which I could not stop calling the Eiffel Tower – parties 6 weeks apart can do that to a person). Instead of painting windows I decided to use square images of Bing. I loved it!

The cake – what can I say? CakeCrazy did it again! Simple yet fun. Exactly what I wanted. Could not have asked for a better centerpiece for our little Manhattan.

The rest of the dessert table was a group effort. Shan’s fab strawberry lemonade cookies, my mom’s blueberry pie, mini powdered donuts (kids always love those) and a crack pie that I made which was only consumed by my Granny. It was good, I swear.

(Credit goes to Sticky for scoring a random wooden taxi cab in a big box store as I had just about given up hope for finding one. That’s all the smash cake needed – way to go babe!)

NYC theme kids birthday NYC theme kids birthday NYC theme kids birthday NYC theme kids birthdayWhen it came to the savory items I had go with New York street fare. Pretzels and hot dogs it is! The names? Well, Jettie is often called “Sketts” which has transformed into “Skettzel” of recent. Sounded good with pretzels so we had to go for it. And the “Bingy’s Weenies” happened because Sticky would not let me name it “Binger’s Weiners”. Good call Stick.

I made and froze the pretzels in advance. The hot dogs were thrown together in a crock pot and then wrapped with bun come party time. Had I not gotten some last minute help from Shan and a few early guests the food would have taken much longer to setup. Thank goodness for the good people in my life.

NYC theme kids birthdayEarly on I knew I wanted to have custom tattoos. This is one of those things I would do differently. Literally a day after the party I found a company that would do a smaller quantity (I have at least 25 of these bad boys left). I am also going to assume the other company’s tats do not stay on with the will of hercules. My apologies to all the parents (especially Vicki, who’s son thought the forehead would make a perfect spot for a tat). They did what I wanted them to as far as party flare goes though – can’t complain about that.

NYC theme kids birthday NYC theme kids birthdayThat first “Happy Birthday” song….there is just something magical about it. We had a little visitor literally moments before it was time to sing. Some may look at this and think “Awe, butterfly on the cake. So sweet.” I looked at those fluttering wings and instantly thought…Locke. He didn’t want to miss his buddy’s first rendition of “Happy Birthday.” Of course he didn’t.

NYC theme kids birthdayAfter “Happy Birthday” it was time for CAKE! He didn’t exactly dive in but he did love it. Me…well, I love these images. Thanks to another amazing friend Jenna for snapping away for us. We will cherish every single one forever!

NYC theme kids birthday NYC theme kids birthday NYC theme kids birthdayWe had quite a crew of kids (in fact, we are missing a few from this image). This isn’t exactly the smiley, everyone say “I love NY” pic I was envisioning…it’s even better.

NYC theme kids birthday NYC theme kids birthdayOh Bing…how dare you turn one? Always let your mommy throw you parties and I will forgive you. While you will never ever remember this bash I can tell you for sure that your mommy will never forget it. Only you would get the one perfect sun-shiny day in the middle of the rainiest season we have ever experienced. It’s fitting really…you are our ray of sunshine. Every. Single. Day.

Can I do a NYC theme again in 5 years?

Love you Bing-A-Ling,

peach scones

Peach SconesAlready having one child you would think the amount of food a 12 month can devour would not shock me. Maybe it’s a boy thing, maybe it’s simply adding a 4th mouth to this home – but good gracious Bing can eat. Great news for him is that I am far less over protective at what goes in his mouth. Don’t get me wrong…he’s not living off hot dogs or anything. But pancake batches are tripled and things like these scones are often shared with the ever so hungry little man.

I am thinking we need to start multiplying our scone batches as well…these peach ones are heavenly.

Peach Scones

I know I post a lot of scones on this blog…but no apologies here because scones rule. Especially light, fluffy ones like these. With crispy edges and bits of sweet, bright peaches. If you can make a scone you can make a friend, that’s how yum these are. (You can also share with Bingham and he will love you forever and ever.)

Peach Scones Peach SconesThe glaze is optional…in some worlds I suppose. In mine there is no choice when it comes to glaze. A scone feels naked without it!

Peach SconesThese are best warm and fresh with a cup of joe. They also freeze beautifully once cooled completely. (You can freeze with the glaze on but I would suggest not if you want your frozen scones to seem super fresh when serving.) When you are ready to enjoy a scone, pull out of freezer, let come to room temperature and then heat ever so slightly in a warm oven (4-5 minutes at 350degrees F). You’ll be happy you didn’t share those leftover scones…and probably wish you would have made more.

Enjoy!

peach scones

Prep time
Cook time
Total time

Serves: 8
Ingredients
  • 2cups plus 2tbsp all purpose flour
  • ⅓cup brown sugar
  • 1tbsp baking powder
  • ¼tsp baking soda
  • ½tsp kosher salt
  • 1stick very cold butter cut in cubes (I throw in freezer for 10 minutes before using)
  • ⅔cup half&half, heavy cream or milk
  • 1 large peach peeled and diced (dab with paper towel if your peachy is really juicy)
  • half&half (or cream or milk) and sugar for brushing and sprinkling on top
  • For Glaze (optional)
  • ½cup powdered sugar
  • 2tbsb (plus more) milk or cream
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven 400degreesF. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Place flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a food processor. Pulse a few quick times. Add the butter and pulse until coarse crumbs form (just 5 or 6 times for me). Add liquid (half&half, cream or milk) and pulse one more time until combined (careful not to over pulse here).
  3. Dump dough onto a well floured surface. If dough seems really wet add some more flour (tbsp at a time). Dough should be slight sticky but not super wet. Put peaches on top of dough and mix in with your hands. Form dough into a disk and cut into 8 wedges. Carefully place on prepared baking sheet. Brush tops with half&half, cream or milk and sprinkle sugar on top.
  4. Bake in over for 12 to 15 minutes until the edges begin to turn golden brown. Allow to cool on sheet.
  5. While baking, make a glaze by whisking together powdered sugar and milk. If glaze is too thin, add more sugar. Too thick, add more milk. Drizzle glaze over warm scones and devour.
