diy bleached pine cones

DIY Bleached Pine ConesMy holiday decor is rather lacking of it’s normal grandeur this year. For one we have a toddler boy who has yet to grasp “no touch” or “only for looking” or “don’t throw” or “no, no, we don’t destroy things” or “that’s not for climbing.”  Boys… (or at least our boy, he is especially rotten.)

Secondly, I had forgotten that all my garland from last year needed relit…which takes forever. I need to force myself to do it this year otherwise come holiday 2016 and I will be in the same boat upon opening the bin to my Christmas garland. (Insert bummer face.)

What I did manage to accomplish this year was a little DIY project that required almost zero effort. (Considering my parents collected the pine cones for me, I’d say I really got out easy with this one.) I have been wanting to add more of a natural aspect to our decor but I wanted something different. When I spied an image of bleached pine cones my “aha” button went off. They’re light. They’re fun. They’re different. Exactly what I was looking for.

Here’s the 411 on it:

Step 1 Collect as many pine cones as you would like to bleach. (And get someone else to do it for you like me!)

DIY Bleached Pine ConesStep 2 Place pine cones in a large bucket or contain and fill with equal parts bleach and water. (I purchased bleach from a dollar store.) Place a plate on top with a heavy object to hold pine cones down in bleach mixture. Allow pine cones to soak for at least 24 hours.

DIY Bleached Pine ConesStep 3 Carefully drain the bleach solution and lay pine cones out in a single layer to dry. They will be closed, and some still dark but after a couple of days they will open and lighten. Be sure to set in an area that is moisture free – a sunny closed in porch works well. The smell of bleach goes away significantly once they are dry….goes away completely a few days after that.

DIY Bleached Pine ConesAnd that’s it! After they have dried they open up and look like this:

DIY Bleached Pine ConesThe color reminds me so much of coffee with cream. They go beautifully with natural things as well as sparkly silver and gold.

DIY Bleached Pine ConesAs far as decorating is concerned I have not done much with them other than fill a couple of hurricanes that I have sitting on my dining room table. They are gorgeous though! I would love to make garland for the living room as I think it would go beautifully with our real tree. If you end up bleaching some pine cones of your own please share by tagging #prettyplainjanes!

Happy Decorating! (To my fellow procrastinators!)

hot cocoa puppy chow

Hot Cocoa Puppy ChowWhether you call it muddy buddies or puppy chow there is no question that the combination of peanut butter, powdered sugar, chocolate and Chex cereal is basically legal crack. Can you not devour 2 servings just by simply being the one in charge of making and bringing the crack? If you answer yes you are a far better person than me (with the willpower of 1000 men apparently).

While I am a big, BIG original puppy chow mix fan I do love the 100s of alternative combinations one can try…including this hot cocoa version. It’s sweet and crunchy just as you would want this treat to be but instead of peanut butter as the accent flavor you get to experience hot cocoa….and where there is hot cocoa there are marshmallows…and where there are marshmallows there is happiness. Lots and lots of happiness.

Hot Cocoa Puppy Chow Hot Cocoa Puppy ChowDo you have a favorite way to prepare puppy chow? I’m not sure I could chose a fave but I do know they are all equally crack-like in my world.

Enjoy!

just breath

Back at it again with an update on the gap in my stomach…aka diastatis recti. I realize this info does not pertain to everyone but I am putting my journey out there regardless because  a. not a lot of women know about this and b. the messages I have received in regards to this condition are motivation in and of themselves. (Thank you!)

I had my follow up appointment with my physical therapist and the good news is my DR (going to use this acronym instead of typing diastatis recti every single time) has closed to one finger width. Very, very pleased about that. But…I have been wearing a binder around my waist to sort of keep things together and as a reminder to use that part of the body. Once the binder is off in a couple of weeks we will truly see the progress I have made.

diastasis_recti_5

In all fairness what I have been focusing on more than anything since my first PT appointment has been my breathing. And by that I simply mean the following:

Consciously exhaling all the time.

Sounds easy, right? Like something I should have already been doing. I thought the same thing until I realized how much I hold my breath. And I know I am not the only one. Some things to focus on…    Exhale when:

  • you pick up your child and put down your child
  • go up and down stairs
  • get in and out of the car
  • go to the bathroom (this is a big one – that last place a person should hold their breath is while on the potty)
  • begin to exhale when you feel a sneeze or cough coming on (really takes the pressure off)
  • in general when picking up something, putting down something or getting into or out of sitting/laying positions

As simple as these things sound women who have carried babies lose sight of these because we go months without using our diaphragms properly. (You know, since there is a human being in the way and all.) And honestly, no matter man or woman, pregnancy or not, we all have a tendency to hold our breath when we should be exhaling. Especially during activities such as sports.

Obviously I am no doctor, or physical therapist, but simply focusing on how I breath the last few weeks has improved my core strength ten fold. I now feel confident enough to run again, which my PT agreed I am ready for.

This guidance has been a gift like no other. I hope anyone out there with a DR (no matter how big or small, or how long its been since you had a child) knows that there is help available. Your gap can in fact reduce and you can get back to feeling less pain and more confidence in your core. We should love our cores, they are our center, what keeps us standing. If we don’t take care of them how can they take care of us?

Thanks again to all the ladies who have messaged me! You have no idea how much fulfillment those conversations give me.

wish list to boot

I can’t lie…my brain is mush at the moment. Between editing and designing and sneaking in more shooting whilst completely and totally being in the weeds with shooting, editing, blogging, designing, Christmas shopping and basically everything in life I am feeling a little woah. But then it’s December and I am not sure how else to operate. (And honestly should have known better when I planned two big trips in the middle of November without realizing how much that would put me behind. Silly me…)

With all that being said I refuse to allow the craziness to consume me and I will enjoy my favorite parts of this season. Even if I have force myself because let’s face it…being busy is not living. It’s just being busy. Which is sort of boring if you think about it.

One fun thing I have slacked on is getting my wish list around for our families. This is something I get worse and worse at every single year. I really do not need anything, in fact I am longing for less things. But I do love gift giving so I have to do my part to make another gift giver happy.

I can usually count on my mom or husband to “surprise” me with a new pair of boots. (Let’s be clear – I will always have room for more boots. Do I need them – absolutely not. They do however put a smile on my face, so….. I’m gonna keep em.) This is my wish list for holiday 2015, and there’s a reason behind each selection…

1Because a mom has every right to look stylish while playing in the snow with her kiddos.

2My shoe closet has never met a wedge bootie, I think the time for an introduction has come.

3Believe it or not I do not own a pair of riding boots.

4Because they are cute and timeless.

5Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! These are the ones I want worse than gold. They swoon me, they make me blush, they need to be part of my fall/winter life. I LOVE THEM. (Hint, hint. Wink, wink.)

6These, these bad boys, I absolutely and utterly do not need for any reason other than they are hot and I might want to feel sexy…someday…again..maybe.

for your turkey

I believe there is some sort of law that requires people to purchase twice as much bird as their family can eat on Thanksgiving day. This of course is a good thing becasue just like chicken, turkey is incredibly versatile.

Here are some of my favorite PPJ recipes that are ready and waiting for your leftover white or dark meat. If the recipe already contains meat simply replace with turkey (throw in at the end if the recipe calls for cooking the meat – your bird has already been through that). If a vegetarian recipe, add some meat during the last step. Theses dishes will taste nothing like yesterday’s, which is a good thing.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone! Enjoy those leftovers!
