suits we love

It’s officially here – swimsuit season. Is there a more dreaded piece of clothing to shop for? And forget those “shop your shape” tactics – they are helpful, yes, but very few women can be summed up in one specific shape. You have to put in the work and try on many styles in different brands. Here are some suits we love and are coveting. They are not perfection by any means but they will at least get us through a pool date without hiding under a cover-up the entire time.

Brandy J:brandy_swim1Old Navy Halter Top great classic top with adjustable back and neck ties. 2Old Navy Boy-Short Bottom sits low on my straight hips adding width while providing full coverage. 3ASOS Plunge Backless Suit is meant for those rare occasions with husband only (not something I would want to chase a toddler in). This suit makes me feel classy and sexy yet covered up. 4 ASOS Floral Bandeau Bikini Top has caught my eye for it’s fun print and bandeau style. Definitely on my “try” list. 5Old Navy Fold-Over Bikini Bottom is another favorite bottom of mine. These are perfect for a narrow hip and the fold-over style is subtle yet fun.

Shan:shan_swim1 This bandeau top from Victoria’s Secret is great because it doesn’t have tons of padding but provides adequate support, and paired with (2) Urban Outfitters High-Waisted bottoms you get a fun, retro look. 3 Old Navy has a great selection of “control max” suits that are slimming and flattering for a curvy girl. This was my swim-class go-to suit for toting a tot around in the water. 4 This ASOS floral had me at hello! The band visually separates the suit, lending your waistline some help- and the colors are to die for!

Finding a suit you love and feel great in can seem like mission impossible. Knowing your body and what flatters you best is the key to shopping for the perfect suit!

bourbon bread pudding

 bourbon_bread_pudding_4

As a young girl, I adored baking with my mom.  She used to let me sift the flour and measure the brown sugar while she was getting ready to bake a batch of chocolate chip cookies.  I loved smashing the brown sugar into the bottom of the measuring cup until it was full and then pouring it into the mixing bowl to see the perfect cup shape of sugar atop of the flour.  I now have 3 young children of my own and still love to bake.  The only down side to baking is the mess that always takes place during the process.  But in the end, the mess is always worth the sugary treat that follows!

While searching for recipes for a brunch idea, I found this recipe. And any recipe that has 4 cups of half-and-half has to be delicious!  This is a rich dessert that will please almost any palate. Even my dad, who doesn’t care for bread pudding, said this was fantastic. With Father’s Day just around the corner, I bet your dad might just love too!

BOURBON BREAD PUDDING (Recipe adapted from “The Back In The Day Bakery Cookbook”, written by Cheryl & Griffith Day.)

FOR THE PUDDING:

  • 1 ½ POUNDS Ciabatta { I like to use the baguettes instead of a large loaf }, cubed into 2-inch cubes
  • 4 cups half-and-half
  • 12 tablespoons { 1 ½ sticks } unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons pure vanilla extract { I like to use vanilla bean paste for a rich vanilla flavor }
  • 5 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 cup golden raisins { cranberries are a great substitute or do a mix of each }

FOR THE BOURBON GLAZE:

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons bourbon
  • 1 cup confectioners’ sugar
  • ½ cup heavy cream

Position a rack in the lower third of the oven and preheat the oven to 350* F.  Butter a 9×13 baking dish.

To make the pudding:  After cubing the bread, put in an extra-large bowl and pour the half-and-half over it, tossing it gently to soak the bread.  Let sit at room temperature while you prepare the custard.

In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.  Remove from heat, add brown sugar, granulated sugar, and vanilla, and stir until well combined and smooth.

In a medium bowl, whisk the eggs, and then add the butter-sugar mixture, stirring well until combined and smooth.  Pour the custard mixture over the bread, tossing gently to incorporate the custard and half-and-half mixture until well combined.  Gently stir in raisins.

Pour the bread mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it evenly.  You will need to gently press down on the bread mixture to make sure it doesn’t fall over the sides of your baking dish.  Make sure the liquid covers the bread.  Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 55 minutes.  Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, until the bread pudding is golden brown.  Set the pudding aside while you prepare the glaze.

To make the bourbon glaze:  Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over the medium heat.  Remove from the heat and add the bourbon and confectioners’ sugar, stirring until incorporated.  Add the cream and mix until smooth.

Pour the glaze over the top of the bread pudding and let it sit for 15 minutes before serving.  The bread pudding is best served warm, but it can be refrigerated, tightly covered, for up to 4 days.  It is best eaten the day it’s prepared.

boozy guinness pretzel truffles

Father’s Day is a few weeks away- and I couldn’t think of a better boozed up treat for Father’s Day gifting.  Truffles are fairly simple to make- and the flavor combination in these is incredible!

Speaking of the flavor combination- these were suppose to be one of those treats that I make but don’t eat.  Brand and I started a cleanse yesterday, and let’s just say these are NOT on the “allowed to eat” list.  The wedding is sneaking up on me and I am trying to get my severe sweet tooth in tact, but these were staring me right in the face.  After all, I can’t gush to you all about how fabulous they are if I don’t really know.  So, I had a bite… or two.

Guinness Pretzel Truffles

Recipe by Sprinkle Bakes

Yield: 16 truffles
Prep: 30 minutes
Total with chilling: 3 hrs 15 minutes

  • 12 oz. bottle Guinness Extra Stout (divided)
  • 8 oz. semisweet chocolate
  • 1/2 cup softened unsalted butter, cut into pieces
  • 3/4 cup finely pulverized pretzel rods
  • 3/4 cup crushed pretzels for rolling truffles

  1. Place 1/4 cup plus 2 tbsp. Guinness Stout in a 2 cup saucepan.  Set aside.
  2. Pour the remaining Guinness Stout in a separate small saucepan and bring to a simmer.  Cook until reduced to 1 tablespoon, about 15- 20 minutes.  Be sure to keep an eye on this because, once reduced considerably, it can burn easily.
  3. Chop the chocolate into pieces and place in the saucepan with the Guinness Stout. Place the saucepan over medium- low heat and let stand until the chocolate starts to melt.  Stir with a wire whisk to blend together the chocolate pieces, but don’t whisk vigorously – we’re not trying to incorporate air.
  4. When the chocolate is melted and smooth, begin to add butter 1 tbsp.  at a time. Whisk gently until butter is melted, and then add the 1 tbsp. Guinness Stout reduction.  Stir in the pulverized pretzels.
  5. Pour the chocolate mixture into a bowl and chill in the refrigerator until firm (or overnight).
  6. Line a cookie sheet with wax paper. Scoop out ganache out by the heaping tablespoon and quickly roll between your palms.
  7. Once all the chocolate is used up, chill the truffles in an air-tight container in the fridge until ready to roll in crushed pretzels. These chocolates will keep for 7 days when stored properly in the refrigerator.  Roll truffles in crushed pretzels just before serving (so they’ll be crunchy!).

protected fun in the sun

sun_protection_1Protect yourself from the sun – sounds simple enough.  After all the sun ages our skin and even worse, causes cancer.  You would think aged skin and cancer would be enough to have us all sporting hats and slathering on sunscreen yet year after year millions of people flock to the sun and tanning beds.  I am certainly guilty on all counts.  Used tanning beds in high school before prom and spent most of my days by the pool sunbathing when living in Florida at age 19.  Being tan made me feel good and like so many others I loved the way it looked.  Now when I come across a picture from those days I cringe at how ridiculously tan I am.  Worse than the way I look is what I did to my skin – irreversible damage and added risk for skin cancer.  Since turning back the clock and slapping some sense into younger Brandy is not an option, I have to do what I can now to protect my skin and educate my daughter on why it’s so important protect hers.

The sun damages all skin types – light, dark, easily burns, never burns – it does not matter the sun will age you.  Everyone is at risk for cancer as well, with certain factors making you even more prone to it (keep in mind if you do not fit any of these criteria you still need to protect yourself, anyone can get skin cancer):

  • A lighter natural skin color.
  • Family history of skin cancer.
  • A personal history of skin cancer.
  • Exposure to the sun through work and play.
  • A history of sunburns early in life.
  • A history of indoor tanning.
  • Skin that burns, freckles, reddens easily, or becomes painful in the sun.
  • Blue or green eyes.
  • Natural blond or red hair.
  • Certain types and a large number of moles (more than 50+, any shape, size, color counts).

Summer is upon us and no one wants to stay indoors all day.  It’s also a fact that the sun is not pure evil – we need the vitamin D it provides, just not the overexposure.  Enjoying the outdoors and avoiding the harm is as easy as sunscreen application and a hat.  Here are some things I recommend (all sunscreens are EWG approved):sun_protection1J Crew Summer Straw Hat 2Coppertone Faces Sensitive Skin Suncreen Lotion, SPF 50 3Aveeno Baby Natural Protection Mineral Block Face Stick, SPF 50 4CVS Baby Sun Lotion Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50 5Coppertone Coppertone Sensitive Skin Spf 50 Sunscreen Lotion 6H&M Sunglasses

Remember to apply sunscreen at least once every 2 hours and more when sweating or swimming.  It should be used daily on the face, no matter the time of year (damage happens on cloudy days as well).  And please don’t forget about the kids, even if they tan and don’t burn.  Those early years are vital and one burn or tan can effect them for life.

Happy fun in the sun this year!  I know you’ll look fabulous sporting your beach hat and sunglasses, your future self will thank you as well.
