a little crew nest

crews_room_9

Nursery design for this mum was most definitely one of the more glamorous perks to carrying that wiggly baby boy in my belly. First I must say, I truly dislike the term nursery. As soon as I say it aloud my brain is flooded with images of pale yellow flat paint and bad teddy bear wall borders. Because I couldn’t seem to shake the stigma attached, this little boy’s room could not, would not, be a nursery. It needed to be a space filled with fun, warm energy, light, and color. It would be a place to piece together, little by little, with unique pieces from all over, that somehow fit together to build a cozy space. It would be a nest.

Living in a such an old house, bedroom space is teeny tiny, so I knew I needed to utilize every inch of this little boy’s room. I mapped things out in my head, and for a whole year I found bits and pieces along the way to create a space I’d hope he’d come to love as much as his mum. There were lots of DIY projects and many times I had to explain my hair brained ideas to a very skeptical husband. In a way, I’m glad our Crew was a bit of an early bird in his arrival. It seems nearly impossible to design a room for someone I have not met, and watching him notice new things as they’ve come into his little space has made this mama’s heart happy.

crews_room_8

crews_room_10crews_room_6 Our basement is filled with treasures. When I found the 100+ year old fruit cellar door just laying untouched in the scary basement, I knew it would make a perfect crib backdrop, (don’t worry, we cleaned it). I’m so happy to incorporate pieces of this house into his little nest, (and I think it makes our old lady house happy too). His antique yellow dresser was a $10.00 garage sale find that just needed some refinishing love and a fresh color to wear. His light fixture is a wire basket I turned upside down and attached to a basic hardware store fixture. I loved the industrial rough look I was trying to bring in, as well as the fact that it guards the bulb, which is always good for flying objects in a little boy room! I struggled to find a curtain rod that seemed “manly” enough and decided to just hang them by way of metal pipes and connectors. With his room being so tiny, I filled every nook and cranny. I painted a small wall with chalkboard paint, as well as magnetic paint, to create a fun little magnetic chalkboard for him to play. Magnetic paint is much like painting with very heavy tar, and half way through I was truly doubting this idea, but he adores that silly wall and it will grow with him as he gets older.

Finished off with navy stripes, a comfy chair, some meaningful art, and fun wire wall baskets, this little nest came together just as I’d hoped. When I walk in, it feels bright, and happy, and silly, and fun. It is exactly a nest for a Crewbear and has this mama bird flying high.

Happy Nesting.

key lime pie squares

key_lime_squares_3

When I was a few months pregnant with Adelynn, my step sister and her husband got married in Key West, Florida.  My sister Brandy and I explored about every inch of that island by foot, to keep our minds off of the fact that we could not lie on the beach sipping cocktails. (I swear I will make it back some day to explore the sipping of cocktails on the beach side of Key West.)  Being pregnant in a place like Key West wasn’t all bad though- we stumbled upon a place called Kermit’s Key Lime Shoppe that literally sells anything and everything key lime.  A milkshake came first, followed by taffy, followed by pie, followed by a complete love for key lime anything.  (Since then I have learned that Kermit’s is an infamous tourist must-see-  good thing we stopped by!)

One of my favorite food bloggers, Sally’s Baking Addiction, posted these lovely bars a few weeks back.  Suddenly they were staring me in the face everywhere I looked- my instagram feed, facebook page, other bloggers were making them.  Not only that, but Brandy J has been begging me to make just about anything Key Lime for about two years now- so, here they are.

I knew I would love them as soon as I read the recipe list and found Nellie and Joe’s famous Key West Lime Juice on it.  Here in the midwest, its pretty darn near impossible to get your hands on some real Key Limes- but sneaking this into your recipe in a pinch does the trick (and it’s available at Walmart!).

Key Lime Pie Bars

Recipe source:  Sally’s Baking Addiction

Ingredients:

Crust:
    • 2 cups finely crushed crunchy gingersnap cookies (I used graham crackers)
    • 3 Tablespoons salted butter, melted
Filling:
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened to room temperature
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 14-ounce can of sweetened condensed milk (not fat free)
  • 1/2 cup key lime juice
  • 2 teaspoons lime zest (about 1 lime)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350F degrees. Line a 9×9 baking pan with aluminum foil, leaving an overhang on the sides, and lightly spray with nonstick spray. Set aside.
  2. Make the crust: Pulverize the crunchy gingersnap cookies into a fine crumb with a food processor. Pour into a medium sized bowl and mix with the melted butter. Press firmly and evenly into the prepared baking pan. Bake the crust for 10 minutes as you make the filling.
  3. Make the filling: In a large bowl using a handheld mixer, beat the cream cheese on high speed until smooth. Beat in the egg yolks, scraping down the sides as needed. Beat in the sweetened condensed milk, lime juice, and lime zest until combined. Pour into the warm crust.
  4. Bake for 15-18 minutes, or until the edges of the bars begin to brown. Allow the bars to cool at room temperature in the pan on a wire rack. Once cooled, place the the refrigerator to chill completely, at least 2 hours.
  5. Once chilled, lift the bars out of the pan using the aluminum foil overhang. Cut into squares.

*My texture came out a bit off-  I had a mishap and found myself with evaporated milk instead of condensed sweetened milk.  For every cup of milk I added one cup of sugar and heated until it dissolved- but I do think that my portions ended up slightly off.  None the less they were still delish!!

Enjoy!!

fake bake rave

Ever since we dropped the bad habit of sunbathing and visiting tanning salons, Shan and I have been on the never ending search for the best self tanner.  For me this journey started many years ago and has been nothing but a struggle with every brand I tried.  If I managed to somehow miraculously spread the color evenly I would then have to walk around in my birthday suit for at least 20 minutes before putting clothes on (which 99% of the time still rubbed off no matter how long I ran around naked).  The color was always just a little bit off as well, resembling an Oompa Loompa relative more than my actual tan color.  And then there was the smell, what is with the smell?  Some are reminiscent of kitty litter mixed with suntan lotion, no good.  Last but not least is it never lasted.  Rubbing off in some places before others – I had odd skin discoloration before it all came off.  Obviously self tanners and I have had a bad relationship until now.

I want to hug Guest Jane Vicki (and her BFF Lindsay) for casually mentioning how she loved Fake Bake Flawless.  Before finishing her thought she ran into her bathroom and reappeared with a spray bottle and mitt.  Right before our eyes she began applying to her leg. All I could think was “Now she’s going to have to get naked, rub it all over and sit around for 30 minutes.  What is she doing?”.  Much to my surprise she didn’t have to get naked, instead she had instant beautiful color on her leg that looked natural and even.  It was truly remarkable.  Shan and I ordered ours that very day and after a couple of weeks we are Fake Bake believers.

The process is really quite simple (above images show technique, product was already distributed evenly on all parts of skin).  Spray on included mitt, rub into exfoliated skin in a circular motion and reapply every day until you achieve desired color.  Only once a week after you are the perfect tan.  It stays on through showers, workouts and dips in the pool.  The smell is wonderful and has thus far not rubbed off in places or on articles of clothing.  Application is by far the simplest I have ever experienced as well.  Bending knees and elbows while applying and being mindful on hands and feet are the only “rules”.  The color is instant so you can see where you are applying, a huge improvement from the “wait and see” lotions.

Thank you Vicki and thank you Fake Bake Flawless for finally giving us that glorious sun kissed skin without the actual sun.  We know it’s only been a couple of weeks but so far we are completely satisfied.  Anyone out there using Fake Bake or another self tanner you can’t stop talking about?  We would love to hear about your experience!

Happy safe tanning…

festival wear

festival_wear_1When it comes to festivals, especially those celebrating food, you can count me in.  We spent the weekend in Belleview, MI partaking in some hotel pool time and a little event they have every year called the Strawberry Festival.  Dressing for an incredibly hot day of walking around is not my strong suit – no matter what I wear I end up feeling gross about an hour into the day.  My first instinct was a large brimmed hat and maxi dress, but then I spied my neglected denim shirt dress and my bag was packed.  As for my hair you should have seen it the day before (it was awesome, which is rare and I regret not documenting it).  Unfortunately yesterday it was not cooperating, I was running out of time, and up in a high pony it went.  In my next life I would like J Lo’s perfect hairline for rocking up-dos (ok, in my next life I just want J Lo’s everything).

festival_wear_2Jettie was very restless, she knew there was a train ride with her name on it.  She did take a moment to show off her sandals of course though.
