walnut, parsley and parmesan linguini

The last few weeks have included 2 long road trips and gobs of eating out.  While we had a fantastic little adventure I am ready to stay put for a bit and cook out of my kitchen.  Last night I was in the mood for a new recipe.  Something simple that would satisfy my “finally home” craving.  This could not have fit the bill more perfectly.  5 ingredients combine to make a nutty pasta dish that fills you with that “oh so good” feeling.  It was just what me and my kitchen needed.

walnut_parmesan_parsley_linguini_2More than not my “pantry” would consist of these items which sends this dish into 5 star status.  Nuts, pasta, fresh herbs, garlic and parmesan cheese – can’t imagine a kitchen without them.

walnut, parsley and parmesan linguini

Serves: 2 servings
Ingredients
  • ½ lb dried linguini
  • ½ cup of roughly chopped walnuts
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1 cup parsley leaves (plus extra for garnish)
  • ⅓ cup grated parmesan (plus extra for garnish)
  • 4 tablespoons olive oil
  • ¼ cup reserved cooking liquid from pasta
  • Salt and pepper
Instructions
  1. Fill a large pot with water and bring to a boil. Add salt and pasta and cook till al dente. Reserve 1 cup of pasta water and then drain, set aside.
  2. Roughly chop parsley leaves, grate parmesan and finely chop garlic. Set aside.
  3. Dry the pot you cooked the pasta in, add 1 tablespoon of olive oil and cook the garlic till lightly golden. Add parsley and walnuts and stir to infuse the olive for a minute.
  4. Return the pasta to the pot over a low flame. Add the remainder of the olive oil and enough cooking liquid to help coat the pasta with the other ingredients as you combine (took about ⅓ cup for me). Add the parmesan and stir to create a creamy coating on the pasta.
  5. Season to taste and garnish with extra parsley and parmesan to serve.
Notes
This recipe can easily be doubled to serve 4 (and use the entire box of pasta).

pumpkin crumb cake

There is no turning back, it’s autumn around here.  I am in the midst of seasoning out Adelynn’s closet (AKA hiding all of her beloved summer dresses), and mine as well.  Cookie baking is in full swing as “baking season” makes it’s appearance- I’ve been spending more time in my kitchen than any other rooms in my house combined.  But that’s pretty normal for me.

pumpkin_crumb_cake_3Not to be like Hobby Lobby, but I’ve already got Christmas on the mind.  Looking back on last year I have a lot of mixed emotions.  Last Christmas was Flour Loves Sugar’s first, and I was busier than I could have ever dreamed.  When you start a business (and have big dreams for it), it gets really hard to tell anyone no.  So there I was, full of “yes! sure! I can do that!”, working around the clock.

It was exhilarating, and truly, I enjoyed it.  But then Christmas day came and went and all I was left with was a sad feeling that I had missed something (and a messy kitchen).  My favorite part of the Christmas season is the cozy part.  The movies on the couch.  The gift wrapping.  The glow of the tree.  And I hardly got to enjoy any of those things.   I was so busy that I worked away Christmas.

This year I am working hard now to find ways to lessen the load that is coming.  I’m trying to soak up fall, and prep for Christmas so that this year I can spend more of it enjoying what these lovely seasons are really about- my sweet little family.  I am finding that writing for this blog and baking for these posts helps keep me in the present.  Baking not just cookies, but other things that I love to make.. like this pumpkin crumb cake.

pumpkin crumb cake

Ingredients
  • Crumb Topping:
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup (half-stick) unsalted butter, cold
  • ½ cup dark brown sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • Cake:
  • 2 cups (250 grams) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ½ teaspoon cardamom
  • 1 cup pure pumpkin puree
  • ½ cup dark brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • ¼ cup pure maple syrup
  • ¼ cup buttermilk
  • Glaze:
  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk or coffee creamer (I used Hazelnut!)
Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350F. Prepare a 9x9 baking dish by generously greasing and set aside.
  2. First, prepare your crumb topping: In a small bowl, whisk the flour, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon together. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or a fork. I usually end up using my fingers to achieve the crumbly, sand-like texture. Set aside.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves together until combined. In another bowl, whisk the pumpkin, vanilla, brown sugar, oil, maple syrup, and milk together until smooth. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined- be so careful not to over-mix the batter!! Spoon the batter into the prepared baking pan. Pour the crumb topping evenly on top and gently press them down into the batter.
  4. Next, bake your cake for about 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, insert a toothpick into the center of the cake to check fore doneness. If the toothpick has wet batter on it, bake the cake for 5 more minutes.
  5. For the glaze, whisk the confectioners' sugar and 2 tablespoons of creamer/milk together until smooth. Add more creamer/milk to thin, or more powdered sugar if it needs thickened up a bit. Drizzle over cake. Enjoy cake warm or at room temperature. Cover cake tightly and store at room temperature or in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Cake may be frozen for up to 2 months.
  6. Enjoy!

My recipe was adapted from Sally‘s pumpkin coffee cake.

pumpkin_crumb_cake_4I hope you are soaking up fall in your house as well!  This cake will certainly do the trick, if not!

flirty date night makeup

One of my very closest friends has one of those faces that really doesn’t need makeup.  Huge blue eyes and a megawatt smile,  she lights up a room even with a fresh-showered face, something that I have always been envious of.    I love make-up, and I know that the “all-natural” face just isn’t my element.. but what I really love about that is that when she does put a bit of something on the contrast is captivating.

date_night_eyes_1A few years ago, I was that girl that didn’t leave the house without a full face on.  I’ve always loved makeup and when I had the time it was one of my favorite parts of the day.  (That was 21-year-old-don’t-know-what-busy-means Shan).  I still love it, but most days it consists of natural colors and only takes a fraction of the time.  Occasionally though, date night rolls around and Josh knows to give me as long as I would like- I swear its therapeutic.  When Brandy shot this post she commented on how I had gained that contrast, and I instantly thought of my pretty friend.  (Of course, I’ll never have those gorgeous blue’s or megawatt smile, but that’s okay.)

date_night_eyes_2

Before starting my “date-night” eyes, I used a light BB Cream foundation, Hoola bronzer and shaded my eyebrows.

For sultry, cranberry-smokey eyes:

1. Using a slightly shimmery shade of white, lightly dust your inner eye and up around your brow line, creating a highlight and a contrast between your eyebrow and shadow.  (Ever seen a picture of a girl, and her eyes look like two black holes in her face?  She forgot this step.  Don’t be that girl!)

2. Next is your fun pop of color.  Personally, cranberry is my go-to color because I like the way it looks with brown eyes.  Using a brush, concentrate this color on the center of your lid, being sure to blend well.

3. Continue this shade over your lid completely, making an even base for your darker shade.

4. Using a liner brush, bring this color down below your lash line as well.  It will peek out from your liner, giving you a “smokey” look.

5. Next get your dark contrast color (a dark plum, brown or even black).  Using your brow as a guide, this color should follow the imaginary line from the corner of your eye to the corner of your brow.  Then, follow the crease of your eye to shade it in to the center using quick brush strokes.

6. Use your eyeliner following the shape of your shadow- mine usually curves up a bit on the ends to make my shadow look complete.

7. Finish your shadow with a loose pigment or light shadow, brushing it on both the top and bottom of the inner corner of your eye.

Complete your look with mascara, blush and a touch of lipstick!

insecurity knocking…

A couple of weeks ago we had the pleasure of seeing a past bridesmaid turned into social media friend.  While we were chatting she mentioned how she was telling everyone at her table how wonderful of photography we do, that we were great to work with, was in love with her friend’s images – nothing but nice things.  She then mentioned that someone said “her husband is really great looking” and BOOM.  Instantly my insecurities bubbled up.  For sure the entire table was wondering what he was doing with me.  For sure they thought what was this gorgeous man doing with that ok looking girl.
20131007-200312.jpg

Feeling insecure is something I am all too familiar with.  Growing up painfully shy I never felt worthy of anyone’s attention.  I can remember begging people inside of my head not to look at me because there was nothing special to see.  I was awkward, had no idea how to control my wavy hair and didn’t have the pretty face that all the other girls had.  Looking in the mirror and knowing, not thinking, I was ugly was reality for me.  Sure I had friends but I was always the “I’ll do whatever you guys want” of the group because why should anyone value my opinion.

That insecure little girl never felt worthy of a handsome husband, let alone being happy and madly in love with him.  Thankfully I grew out of my insane thought process but I do still have lack of confidence that keeps me from enjoying things that should be nothing but enjoyed.  Why couldn’t I just take the compliment about my husband and bask in it?  Why can’t I take all the times we have been told how great we look together and draw security from there?  Why can’t I just smile, feel pretty lucky to have such a handsome man and know that in his eyes I am just as attractive?

Blame can be put on everything from my childhood self esteem issues to truly noticing the signs of aging lately.  And to be completely honest it sometimes feels defeating to be married to a man with that mystical “gets better looking with age” George Clooney power.  But at the end of the day it all comes down to how much I want to like myself.  When I am deep in self loathing it holds me back from experiencing the joy that is mine to experience.  Sitting at a table for two in a lovely restaurant with Sticky is nothing but a waste when all I can think about is how my hair didn’t turn out or how the hostess gave Sticky the “why hello there” look.  This not only ruins my evening but his as well.  Spending one on one time together is crucial in a marriage, tossing it away so carelessly is shameful.

You may wonder why a girl who claims to be so insecure does weekly fashion posts which include many images of herself.  Presuming confidence by the way someone dresses is completely understandable.  Much like presuming someone who is always fabulously made up, has a jet-setting ig account or operates a successful business must have a good perception of themselves.   Fashion is, has and more than likely always will be the constant passion that instills confidence in me.  There are a lot of things about my physical appearance I am uncomfortable with but knowing how to dress helps me deal with those issues.  Being able to share my love for style here is an immeasurable release.  Sticky would be the first to tell you that many of our photo shoots are painful, especially when the blog first started.  Slowly but surely they have gotten better yet no matter how much I enjoy posting and sharing there’s always that nagging voice saying “who does she think she is?”.  He tells me “You’re a woman who loves fashion and wants to share it with others.  Who the hell care if anyone thinks differently?”.  And he is right.

Sticky and I are currently returning from a road trip.  He looks so great in the pilot’s seat with his shades on and sunlight dancing behind him.  Gosh he is such a good looking man but he is also a good man.  A good man who deserves a wife who cares about herself enough to allow him to care for her the way he wants.  We do make a fantastic couple inside and out.  I am missing parts of this amazing adventure with him and I need to stop.  Life is too short to worry about what other’s may think, especially when most of it is contrived in my head.  We are the only ones that truly know what we have, there’s nothing more important than that.

Rewind to “her husband is really great looking.”  Why yes, yes he is.

road trip wear

road_wear_1When it comes to road trips nothing is more important than comfort.  For years I have searched for the perfect look that would leave me feeling at ease in the car yet presentable during pit stops.  Enter Forever’s scuba pants (or knit pants).  Think a cross between a thick legging, wet suit and spanx.  Sounds absolutely wretched but I promise you they will change your life.  The elastic waist provides that great “belly is tucked in” feel.  You can also be in any bizarre traveling position for hours and arrive at your destination without one wrinkle. Pair with layers and flats for a relaxing yet put together look (And don’t forget your clutch for bathroom breaks.).
