sparkly holiday makeup

sparkly_makeup_3

The holidays are a perfect reason to go bold with your makeup- and I couldn’t love this double metallic look more.  Wearable without being obnoxious, and still a little outside the box.  I did not have a metallic silver on hand, but a trip to CVS and $7 later I scored a drugstore steal.  If you don’t have a great metallic in your bag, here are a few that I love!  Any of them can be combined with bold or subtle looks and are a great addition to your collection.

1.  The silver that I used in the look below- Maybelline Eye Studio Color Tattoo is a great drugstore option that wont break the bank.  2. Nars Shadow in Silent Night has awesome pigment and a gorgeous gold color. 3. Sephora Outrageous Prisma Chrome Shadow is another great affordable option, at only $7.

To create this look, here is what we used:

A few simple steps:

1:  Use a light shadow to highlight the line of your brow.

2: Next, I applied the silver cream from the inner corner of my eye over my entire lid.  Cream shadow can be tricky to apply- I prefer my finger over a brush but that is completely up to you!

3: Using a brush, gently sweep the contrasting metallic color from the outter corner of your eye, being careful to not completely cover the first color.  A little tip- holding a tissue under your eye while applying pigment saves you the hassle of trying to get the fallen glitter off of your face!

4: Using the darkest of your colors (this was black for me), add definition by darkening the corner of your eye and lightly sweeping the color along the crease of your eye.

5 & 6:  Using a small brush, extend your darkest color along your lower lid as well, and add a bit of the metallic colors to add sparkle.

7:  Finish your look with liner and mascara!

Happy Holidays,

little snow, big sweater

It is impossible for me to resist a deal, especially those end of season “we need to get rid of these items” steals.  Lately most of my finds are buying ahead for Jettie (another obsession) but when I spied this $5 creamy white gem way past sweater weather I knew I had to have it.  Patience in wearing it pays off on morning like these.  Just a skiff of snow called for something comfy and my thrifty find could not have fit the bill more perfectly.

specialty food gift guide

Gourmet food specialty shops are popping up like crazy lately.  Thanks to Etsy and other growing curated websites, yummy creations are literally at our fingertips.  If you have ever recieved a lovely packaged box of your favorite hand-crafted treat- you know the thrill.  For me, my first was a box of Jeni’s Ice Cream- and it felt like Christmas morning.  (Best. Ice Cream.  Ever.)

I’m passionate about these little shops, not only because I have one of my own, but because I love how personal of an experience it is to buy from them.  A few of these shops have grown to be pretty large, but they all had the very same start.  Just one person, who loved what they made, and decided to share their gift with the world.  A few of my very favorites:

edible_holiday_gift_2013 1. Green Mountain Mini Baked Gourmet mini donuts baked fresh in Vermont.  Seasonal designs and flavors that make fun gifts!

2. Whimsy and Spice Shortbread, biscotti and marshmallows that come packaged in lovely little boxes.

3. MessMakerBaker Jams & Jellies Based right here in our hometown, and owned by Guest Jane Vicki- these are truly the best jams and jellies EVER.  She is always rolling out new flavors, each one better than the last.

4. Black Tie Caramel A variety of gourmet caramels, made in small batches in sunny California.  These have me drooling every time they pop up in my IG feed.

5. Askinose Chocolate   Beautifully wrapped chocolate bars, with an even more beautiful story behind them.  I’m hoping that this sipping chocolate ends up in my stocking this year!

6. Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams  Yes, you can ship ice cream.  And its incredibly exciting when it arrives.  Ice cream at your door is the best idea anyone has ever had in my opinion.  If you haven’t tried Jeni’s- go find a shop or order some!  (Run, not walk- you are seriously missing out!)

7. Dell Cove Spices A great gift for a popcorn lover, DCS offers a wide variety of popcorn seasonings, spices, cocktail rim sugars, and other fun gifts.

Donuts, marshmallows, jam, caramels, chocolate, ice cream and spices- you’ve got all of your bases covered.  Any of these shops make for great holiday gifting- but act fast!  Most shipping cut off dates for the holidays are sometime next week, so you still have a bit of time.  Shop small this holiday season!

tree tradition

This time of year brings on so many wonderful feelings mixed in with a giant gulp of guilt.  There never seems to be enough time to absorb all the magic that is there for the taking.  Currently I am in the weeds with editing, staring at a home that has yet to be decorated and wondering how on earth “the list” will ever be checked off.  And even though we end each season with “next year we will do better” it never changes – it is always crazy.  Thankfully what has changed is our attitudes.  No longer will work or others be put ahead of the things that make us a family, the things that make us smile and the things that remind us what living is truly all about.  Because if we skip the memories that solidify us nothing else matters, including work.  Traditions feed my soul and give me the boost I need to get through each of these busy days.  They are my lifeline and my promise – time will always be made for them, no matter what.

The year we became pregnant with Jettie was such a special one.  Our journey to her was not without bumps and to finally be able to tell the world we were pregnant was the best gift we could have ever asked for.  I’ll never forget that picture perfect snowy day that we began our tradition of cutting down our Christmas tree.  Something we had always talked about and officially started when our family was about to grow.

tree_tradition_1 tree_tradition_2The following year our Jettie was here and we were ecstatic to take her to the tree farm.  She of course had no idea what was going on, which was amusing to us.

tree_tradition_3 tree_tradition_4In 2012 we had a walker which meant we had a little extra “help”.  She was so proud to walk with her Daddy after cutting down the tree.

tree_tradition_5 tree_tradition_6And then this year she actually chopped down the tree herself (kidding… her daddy was standing right beside her to grab the saw just in case).  We made the mistake of going on Black Friday – while we still had fun we decided that less busy days of the season are better for us.  Nonetheless a beautiful (undecorated) canaan fir is standing proudly in our living room.

tree_tradition_7 tree_tradition_8We joke that some year time will get away from us and our “tree cutting” tradition will be choosing a tree in the parking lot of a grocery store.  And honestly that’s more than ok, as long as we are together and it is documented is all that matters.  I am not the super photographer mom of capturing all moments with my big girl camera but certain traditions I will always be sure to grab it.  This is one of them.

Cheers to your family traditions!

gingerbread kiss cookies

I know that it is officially December (and believe me, I have Christmas on the brain), but I want to jump back a second and talk about how thankful I am.

gingerbread_blossoms_4

Every once in awile we all have those months where it feels like someone, somewhere, is sitting there with a voodoo doll they have made of you, sliding in pins.  As the punches roll in it’s easy to let each one hurt a bit more than the last.. it’s easy to overlook all of the good, and focus on the bad. It’s easy to throw your white flag.  It’s easy to feel defeated.

gingerbread_blossoms_3

And then something happens.  A random little bouquet of flowers.  A box of your favorite cupcakes.  A cup of coffee.  A package of “sunshine” when you need it the very most.

Love.

Pouring in from every outlet, somehow making all of the grey dissappear.

Thankful. For you my dear friends, each and every one of you, for making my grey dissappear.

Christmas is about pouring love into other’s lives, and reminding people how very much they mean to you.  Our family has vowed to fill this  Christmas season with random acts of kindness- for friends, family, neighbors and complete strangers.  You don’t need a lot of money to show kindness, only a little time.  Bake a batch of cookies, shovel your neighbors snow, surprise your grandmother  with a handwritten letter in the mail.  Pour love into others lives, because you never know when they are feeling clouded out by grey.
