diy deodorant

Slowly over the last few years I have been putting much more thought into not only the things that I put in my body, but the things that I am applying every day as well.  After all, our skin is the very largest organ that we have, and we have been conditioned to think that if it smells good and makes our skin soft, it’s a good thing.  Sadly, that couldn’t be more false!

Deodorant is something that we apply every single day, something as essential as toothpaste that quite honestly I could never cut out- no matter how bad it may be.  After a circulating post on the dangers of the alluminum content and parabens that we are so generously applying to our skin, I started looking for an alternative.  Our family also just invested in DoTerra’s “Family Physican Kit”, so I dug into my kit in search of an answer.

A simple combination of Essential Lemon oil, cornstarch, baking soda, and coconut oil- and voila! You’ve got a safe, non-toxic, aluminum free deodorant!   I’ve been using this combination for the last month and can honestly say that it works as well as my trusted deodorant. (And I really love the smell!)

To make your own, simply combine 1/4 cup of cornstarch, 1 cup of baking soda, 2 tablespoons of pure, organic coconut oil, and 5 drops of essential oil.  Mix until you have a paste-like texture, that will harden a bit as it sits.  Apply after shower, using your fingertips!

(You guys, I know I spelled deodorant wrong on my lid- don’t make fun of me.)

goodbye ceej

Sixteen years ago I welcomed a teeny tiger kitty into my life. He was ornery and needy. Had this annoying habit of licking skin and photographs. He played fetch like a dog and had some seriously bad breath. Snuggling was his favorite, vacuums were his least favorite. This cat needed me to save him and I was more than happy to oblige. Little did I know how much of my heart he would occupy. Little did I know how much comfort he would bring. Little did I know that at certain times I needed him more than he needed me.

IMG_1062Today we are saying goodbye to our beloved CJ. I kept telling myself this would be easier. Three years ago we said goodbye to his buddy Stew, in almost the exact same circumstances. I was pregnant, he was suffering, it was hard. Last night as I looked at my poor frail kitty it hit me all over again that this was the end. No more CJ snuggles, no more purrs, no more excited welcome homes. A link to a past of living by myself, failed relationships and countless moves will fade away. The cat that somehow burrowed his way into Sticky’s heart will be gone. But the absolute, very worst of all is that I’ll never see this sweet scene again:

IMG_8259Oh CJ how you won the hearts of so many. Thank you for being such a wonderful companion in a roller coaster ride of life changes. But most of all thank you for loving our girl in a way that only you could. We are blessed to have those precious memories of you and her. We are blessed to call you family.

Say hello to Stew for us (try not to annoy the old boy too much). Love you CJ!

spot on pink (24 weeks)

It’s March and I am in desperate need of any and all things Spring.  So much so that my go to grey and black have taken a backseat to softer, more colorful shades.  This pink blazer has been worn twice in one week.  You know, just doing my part to force a season.

blazer_blouse_maternity_bump_style_1 blazer_blouse_maternity_bump_style_2 blazer_blouse_maternity_bump_style_3At 24 weeks I am finally feeling more myself (minus the 24/7 exhaustion and twenty degree rise in body temperature).  Grapes, strawberries, crispy apples and peppermint tea are consumed in the masses daily.  Sticky doesn’t mind all the produce but I do think he was tiring of the pickle and cheddar sandwiches for every “home cooked” meal.  Lucky for him the cooking bug came back a few days ago and I am now venturing beyond grilled cheese.  His excitement over enchiladas going into the oven had me feeling a tinge of guilt. After all, I have not been a good wife and properly feeding my husband of late.  But then I remembered there’s a human being growing inside of me – guilt gone.
