diy mosquito bite relief

Nothing ruins a good summer time more than being eaten up by pesky mosquitoes.  And if you are anything like me they prefer you to all other guests (I read somewhere that Type O negative blood is their favorite, this holds true in my world).  Sure there are plenty of tricks to repelling the nasty blood suckers (like Shan’s fantastic natural spray).  But when not prepared you can become attacked fast leaving you with those annoying “just have to scratch” bites.  Here are some quick home remedy tricks that curb the itch:

If you do not have any of these remedies on hand you can always do the old “make an x in the center of the bite with your fingernail”.  Or simply scratch till you bleed (yeah, we see the scars…).

Do you have any home remedies for relieving mosquito bites?

full term wild (37 weeks)

My apologies for lack of variety in the maternity fashion department.  Here I am again, in another maxi dress.  Wait, is that a belt?  Yep, I went crazy and added one.  Truth is I feel great in a maxi and if a girl feels great in something at full term she sticks with it.

maternity_style_fashion_37_weeks_maxi_dress_1 maternity_style_fashion_37_weeks_maxi_dress_3 maternity_style_fashion_37_weeks_maxi_dress_2A week and a half ago a strange feeling came over me that baby boy was coming early.  Fast forward to today however and he seems nice and cozy – very much the way his big sis felt towards the end.  If he decides to hold out till due date that is more than okay with me.  Yes I have to sleep with 20 pillows, feel utterly exhausted at times and can’t go 5 minutes without a trip to the bathroom.  Yet I love having him in there and already know that bittersweet feeling of a pregnancy ending.  So there is no rush lil’ man, we know we will be snuggling you soon enough.

national doughnut day 2014

donut_june_2014_1If there was ever a good excuse to devour a doughnut it would be that it is “National Doughnut Day”.  The first Friday of every June marks this sweet holiday.  Powdered, glazed, topped with sprinkles – these guilty pleasures are as fun to look at as they are to eat.  So much fun in fact that they have found themselves trending into more categories than just pastries.  Here are some of our favorites:

donut_june_20141Big Mouth Toys ‘The Munchies” Pool Float this may be the most instgrammed pool float ever.  Maybe it’s because it’s a lot less calories to sit in a doughnut than it is to eat one. 2Forever 21 Donut Print Bodysuit this has Carrie Bradshaw written all over it. 3Bread, Cake, Doughnut, Pudding one of Britain’s best bakers recently published a book that included secrets to making the best pastries.  We love this for the gorgeous photography alone. 4Apple iPhone 5c Assorted Donut Phone Cover the perfect way to carry your obsession with you wherever you go. 5Green Mountain Mini-Baked Summer USA Mini Donuts 4th of July is coming up – these adorable guys are begging to be on the picnic table! 6Ceramic Donut Coin Bank a fabulous gift for anyone obsessed with sprinkles and pink icing (that would be our daughters).

Cheers to doughnuts! (If you are not enjoying one by now what are you waiting for?!)

jettie’s kitty cat birthday luncheon

kitty cat party birthday(Invitation can be found at the PPJ Shop!)

Sweet and simple was my mindset going into Jettie’s 3rd birthday celebration this year.  After considering a few concepts the one that kept coming back to me was a kitty cat theme.  My girl is an animal lover, especially when it comes to cats, so I was fairly certain she would be all about it.  This was also her first all girl party which kept the guest list small and perfect for a luncheon.  As always I am never quite sure how the visions in my head will play out in reality – seems like there is always something to add or tweak.  But this time around I have a 3 year old who still talks about her special day.  I’d say that makes it a success.

kitty cat party birthday kitty cat party birthdayWith a smaller guest list I was able to do more personalized place settings.  I found tins in the Target $1 section (thinking they were kitty cats, realizing later they are indeed bunnies – close enough right?) and made ears with felt and plastic headbands from Meijer.  Flour Loves Sugar provided the adorable cookies and my mom made the balls of yarn from styrofoam balls.  I designed the pennants and place cards based on her invitation.  There is something special about having your own little personalized space at the table.  I think the girls really loved it.

kitty cat party birthday kitty cat birthday party kitty cat birthday party kitty cat birthday partyThe food was incredibly simple with chicken, tuna and pb&j sandwiches cut out into kitty cat head shapes as well as fruit and veggie trays.  The adorable cake was done by our friends at CakeCrazy.  We could not have been more thrilled with the way it turned out and tasted.

kitty cat birthday party kitty cat birthday party kitty cat birthday partyWe had a few stations for our pretty felines to enjoy.  As soon as they arrived coloring began followed by everyone getting their whiskers from Shan.  After lunch we played “pin the bow on the kitty”.  All very simple activities to put together that provided a little something during those downtime party moments.

kitty cat birthday party kitty cat birthday party kitty cat birthday party kitty cat birthday partyThe grand finale of a good birthday party is the blowing out of the candles (we let Sticky join the girls for this part of course).  Thank you to Jenna of 180 Photography for capturing these for our family.

kitty cat birthday party kitty cat birthday partyThank goodness for little girls and sweet birthday parties.  Makes my heart happy that our precious kitten enjoyed her day as much as she did.  Can’t wait to see what next year brings in the form of celebrations!

fruit salsa and cinnamon chips

cinnamon_chips_fruit_salsa_1
My therapy lately has been books, particularly anything written by Shauna Niequest. First I read Cold Tangerines, followed by Bread and Wine, and now I am starting Bittersweet (which relates all too well to my life right now.)  I loved Cold Tangerines, but I really loved Bread and Wine.  A collection of short stories that anyone can relate with, followed by great recipes to share around the table.  I finished the book feeling so inspired to open our door more often, and gather with our friends over a meal, to share our stories.  There is something so sacred about that time and those relationships- something that is helping us through our journey right now.   To me, it is the same feeling you get from sitting around a fire late into the night, staring into the flames the world has a way of stopping.  Time doesn’t exist.  We need more time-stopping moments desperately.

cinnamon_chips_fruit_salsa_6
Last night Brandy and I prepared this fruit salsa together, chopping fruit and baking chips as the girls ran around laughing.   Lately, so many of our conversations have been about how complicated pregnancy can be for so many women.  How heartbreaking the journey that is suppose to be filled with joy can really be.  We, as women, read eachothers stories and think, “I have no right to feel bad about my situation, hers is far worse”.  You would be suprised at how often we are curled up on the couch with tear filled eyes, sharing stories that others have shared with us of their own heartache, their own painful journey.  Our hearts are breaking right with yours, we know that pain all too well.  And here is the thing- regardless of your situation, your journey is no less painful than anyone else’s, your tears are just as valid as mine.  You have every right to really feel that pain, you have every right to mourn those dreams.  Your story is important.

This journey has given completely new meaning to writing for me.  Sharing Locke’s story has been my outlet, and the support of other women has been my crutch.  I wonder what would happen if more women shared their journey, how much we could learn from eachother, how much we could help eachother.  I desperately want to wrap my arms around every single person suffering silently through their own heartbreak.  You are not alone.

Faith can not be handed to someone, but in the simplest of gestures it can certainly be demonstrated.  The language of love is universal, and I want to live in a world where we speak it fluently.  A world where we wrap our arms tightly around eachother and face these struggles together.  A world where we open our doors, and gather around eachothers tables, letting time stand still when it needs to.

XO,

shansig

fruit salsa and cinnamon chips

Ingredients
  • Cinnamon Chips:
  • 10 flour tortillas
  • cooking spray, or olive oil, or coconut oil
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • Fruit Salsa:
  • 2 granny smith apples
  • 2 kiwi's
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 lb strawberries
  • ½ lb raspberries
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 3 tbsp fruit preserves (I used strawberry!)
Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350F.
  2. Start by peeling and finely chopping your apples, and place the pieces in a large bowl. Zest your lemon and toss that into the bowl as well, and then cut the lemon in half and sqeeze about 2 tsp of the juice onto the apples & zest.
  3. Next, chop your strawberries and kiwi's and add them to the bowl, follwed by the raspberries that will break apart on their own, stirring well to combine.
  4. Add fruit preserves and brown sugar, and mix well.
  5. Let sit for 15 minutes while chips are baking.
  6. To make your chips, spray each tortilla with cooking spray, or brush with oil on both sides, and then coat in cinnamon sugar. Using a pizza cutter, slice into chips, and place on baking sheet. Bake for 11-13 minutes until chips are crisp!
  7. Store salsa in refrigerator for up to 5 days.
